Are holed inner sills on a Disco an MoT fail?
I'm a bit miffed. I've just got Stig back after having a fair bit of welding done to the rear end of the chassis. My plan was to spend this weeking preparing him for the MoT.
When I checked the sills, I only checked one side (doh!), which was ok. However, I've just seen the other side and it has a couple of holes and doesn't look very screwdriver proof. Upside down welding again, so I aint gonna be doing it.
Are the sills actually structural on a Disco?
How much work is involved in replacing them? I seem to remember seeing somewhere that new ones can be bolted on?

The only actual parts that would fail are around the body mounting points where the chassis is attached, as the body on the disco is seperate from the chassis. It can depend on the extent of the rust on the length, but mine passed one, and a month later most of the sills were re plated, see my pics,

depends which part of which sill you are refering to, the sills are structural in so much as they house th body mounts. The inner wheel arches contain the seatbelts too, and the sill provides support for the rear of the front seatbelts too...

Hmm
Starting to wonder if it's worth bothering. The gearbox is well past needing replacing. I have about 45 degrees (1/8th turn) of free play at the drum and the gate has gone making gear changes a lottery.
Coupled with the (possibly) required welding, it might not actually be worth it on a H reg Disco.
Must practice upside down welding, wouldn't be too bad then.

Can be done upside down, I just elevated the side right up to make it easier, the best is mig welding if you have the kit, or access to a workshop and raise the whole vehicle would be the easiest
Just need to wrap up well, and then the splats dont chase you round so much

the sills are structural & are a pain to do,just doin a pair on a v8 h plate disco jus now,only got the front inner wing to go & its finished,glad of that as its been gettin worked on since jan

Welding upside down isn't too bad until one of the sparks goes down into your ear. You do a very strange dance and swear loudly.

i am new to this welding lark.....believe it or not i have learnt this strange dance in only a few minutes of starting. :shock: ....you pick it up very fast. just got my back floor and rear body crossmember to do now so plenty more practice doing the dance im sure. :lol: :lol:
just bite the bullet and do the welding......

Best thing is to go back as far as you can so there is good clean metal, not good clean wafer thin metal to weld to
Always good for a laugh, especially when the bits fall down your sleeve, boot or trainer, and the crackling noise in your tab of cooking way
and the dance of trying to get your hand down your shirt and ripping it open

It's amazing how they can get inside your boots.
A couple of old mattresses do the trick on something like an old Panda or Suzuki. More difficult on a Disco though.

I've got the dance part sussed. My problem with upside down welding is that I always seem to have difficulty making the bead defy gravity. :?
Moot point at the minute. I'm considering torching the frigging thing!!! Just rebuilt the hand brake. Backplate off. Wire brushed. Expander and adjuster degreased and rebuilt. New shoes. New return springs. Now the b'stard thing won't release properly. Too much slack in the cable and too much rust on the threads to adjust!!!!

All good fun, got to take the console out the motor on the heater has packed up, alright at the moment, but could be interesting this winter, wonder if i could fit internal wipers for the condensation :lol:

LOOKED AT WORK TODAY IN THE TESTER HAND BOOK AND THE SILLS ARE NOT A PART OF THE STRUCTURAL OF THE VEHICLE. THE FUNNY PART IS THAT YOU ARE ALSO ALLOWED ONE OUTER RIGGER ON ONE SIDE TO BE PARTED FROM THE CHASSIS AS LONG AS THE MAIN CHASSIS IS IN GOOD CONDITION AND NOT HOLED.

Necessity being the mother and all that I've discovered I can weld left handed behind a wheel arch using a mirror!
As the the mig-man's dance! I have a friend who works 'in the trade' and he managed to almost burn his crackers off when a large peice of spatter burned through his jeans, pants etc, ran round his crotch and left just under his buttock. Couldn't wear pants for weeks :shock:
And for the ears. I find neglecting your personal hygene for a few days helps protect the skin. Funny sound like frying though.
