Sorry for the bad Nana Mouskouri (or was it Topol in 'Fiddler On The Roof') joke there.
But my brother-in-law had one of these little 'Communist Chariots', it was surprisingly good.
His was a 'M' reg, with about 25,000miles showing when he bought it in 1999(?)
It had its bad points- quite thirsty & a bit slow, but reliable.
After all they were built to cope with a Russian winter.
Once it was re-tyred with a set of the Olympus(?) 'XCL' pattern re-moulds it took some stopping (on the road as well :D )
See the attached picture for the usual type of predicament he got into, & notice the 'Official JSL Recovery Vehicle' * on the main track.
Photo taken around the Yateholme Reservoir road (Burnt Kiln Lane?) at the base of Holme Moss.
He then moved on to a CJ-7, then a long (& ongoing) affliction with Suzuki's.
He did fancy a 90 at one point, but it had to be an exact NAS copy
I wonder if the Niva still survives?

One of our number (in the chat room a couple of nights ago) is on the lookout for a 1.7 Niva. Target cost is around the 600 quid or less mark.
If anyone hears of anything... let us know !

I think I picked up the end of one of the coil springs off one of those once, on a BOAT in the Cotswolds. I found it in a patch of mud in behind the wheel when I got home. Couldn't find the rest of the Lada though.

I'm just wondering how come it's not on the track? Unless of course it's a private play site?

No it was at the side of a public road (a 'BOAT')
It was in the mud because he's a pillock!
Though admittedly, it was very well churned up by previous pillocks. :)

Here's another picture of brother-in-law looking proud to be a Pillock!
And to think he's ex- Royal Navy & now a BT engineer

I take it you've explained the error of such actions to him? And that this sort of thing is why we have the current problems with DEFRA. :(
I would suggest that you point him towards

Matthew, I went around this Byway (& another one in the area) last Sunday on my way home from Manchester Airport.
The area where the 'Pillock-in-law' was stuck in the photos is now blocked off with some rather large boulders, they've been there a while if the grass growth around them is anything to go by.

Following the Niva saga, I saw one of these machines at Whitworth Sun 29th Feb and it was driving really weel. Looked to take on water, hills, rocks with relative ease. I never saw it stuck once :o
Speaking with the owner, he has not modified at all but was hoping for a 2" lift soon

I had a NIVA last year and it would go anywhere I followed a 90 and a sIII for miles with them trying to loose me but it went on and on . :D
I didn't want to get rid but 3 cars was a bit much for the misses so when I bought the disco it had to go . the only thing wrong with it was it was too small to get the family and the camping gear in at the same time..shame
if anybody wants one there is a very clean 17i on an r plate at Snowdon garage in Llanberis for sale ..
And if anybody wants to do a lift apparently vauxhall viva shocks fit and are 2" longer have the same fittings and are very cheap.(£16pair)
and I have front and rear axles steering box and some other bits in the shed free to a good home (or any home other than my shed .need the space)
