As some of you will have seen I had a 'Wanted' ad up requiring a complete selector mechanism for my Discovery.
http://www.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=932I'd been lucky enough, so far without it, not to get in a situation by myself where the lack of a diff-lock was a problem.
Well, bar one, but a JCB Fast-Trac would have had problems in that paddock.
This morning, following several phone calls to local independants, I went to a gearbox reconditioner whos name I was given by all the locals.
At 09:00 I set off westbound along an atrocious M62.
It took a long time to get to the exit I wanted (24), about 20minutes longer than usual.
Down through Sowerby Bridge, having stopped at Copley Motors, and photographed a couple of items for my 'WebShots'.
Then it was up the winding very steep roads climbing up out of the valley, to reach a little village called Wainstalls.
I wasn't sure I'd got to the right place on arrival as there was a very mean Impreza in the yard (WRC Blue & suitably attired as a Clubmans Rally Car')
And a wonderful natural waterfall in the corner of the garden/yard.
I did then see I was in the right place, as a pile of gearbox bits & casing faced me.
After a brief explaination & reminder of my phone-call last week, he took a full selector unit off the shelf.
"Fiver sound okay?"
I bet the main dealers would be a bit dearer!
Then it was back home for my errands as set by SWMBO.
Their 'surveyor' was coming at 14:00, so no good starting anything, thankfully he'd been & gone by 14:45, & the weather had taken up a bit, so out with the cross-head screwdrivers & the 7 & 8mm spanners.
It took about 10minutes to get everything down to casting level - not including getting a plaster for the finger I always cut on a drilled out rivet.
Unbolting & comparing the mechanism revealed a differant lever - did I mess about & swap it, or try it to see if it was okay?
It fitted.
Checked selection by shuffling it backwards & forwards. Okay.
The warning light comes ON :D
Now it was up on the trolley jack at one corner to double check.....
Diff-lock in; wheel won't rotate
Diff-lock out; wheel rotates
Yippeee!!
Now reassembly;
Equally quick, apart from losing a clip from the window switch panel to hold it into the console.
I was slightly wary as the levers were a bit differantly placed, but all the trim fitted okay.
HOWEVER;
On final assembly, the hand brake has lost it's ratchet. If the button is pulled out it's okay, but not a solution.
So;
Can anyone tell me if there's a spring in the lever to hold the ratchet in place?
Is it a 'clock spring', or another type?
Is it easily replaced, or do I need a new lever?
