Need a good winch
« on: July 12, 2005, 14:39:46 »
Well ordered a T-max winch, but due to all of them breaking and poor quality, they didn’t carry out order and gave me money back. Has anyone got any thoughts of good value winch that is reliable (or is this asking to much?)
Looks like I might just get a superwinch as cheaper one could be false economy. Has anyone got the ep9.0/ep19.0 and if so, are they any good?

I have the EP9 and it has been fine. The only problem I had was the connector for the handset. The pins were badly installed an one pushed out when connected. Easily sorted.

It has a clutch housing longer than most, so make sure your bumper will take it.

My T-Max has been fine.
Youve seen it in action, and if the battery hadnt of started dying due to lack of charge , it would have been quicker across that Whaddon ditch

but is suppliers that are pulling them off shelves as they are getting a very large number returned, and not one specific fault all random. so until sorted, most reputable places are refusing to sell :( .
was due to yours being a good performer and reliable that I placed order.  :?

It could be that a lot of T-Maxs are giving trouble as proportionally there are an awful lot of T-Maxs being sold -they appear to be very popular.

Only until recently my warn had been trouble free but I have had to replace 2 solenoids to fix it.

Not sure that any winch will be completely trouble free but its how easy it is to get the bits to fix it that can be a key factor.

Got mine last year at Billing. Goodwinch were doing a VAT free deal.

Looked up the bumper last night and it came from First Four.

Just looked at their web site and I want one of those Shadow bumpers!!! Now if sexy is not too inappropriate for a bumper, then sexy it is

But seriously, the std Defender bumper is very well made. A year later and not a hint of corrosion.

Different people seem to have different opinions... I think the warn are best personally but i do rate superwinch very highly.

I think as long as you can get parts you will be alright to be honest.

The key is maintenance, ie if you let the gears go rusty then obviously they won't work.

have you thought about a PTO powered winch...? they don't always look quite as cool as the latest electric creations but are tough, very reliable and parts are available overnight from PG Winches or superwinch themselves.
i paid around £200 for the PTO powered superwinch i'm currently fitting to my truck, the list price when it was new was almost £2k...!!!
it'll pull all day every day, won't overheat like the 'lecky ones and is considerably more powerfull...

Come up make the best cheap winch (in my experience sold loads persentage of warrenty claims was the lowest of all the makes I sold and back up was the best) Warn are good but I found spares very expensive and very very slow delivery, Super winch now sell comeups badged as Superwinch.
I would buy a Come up from PG winches www.winchrepairs.co.uk he gives a warrenty even for professional use, and is very competitive on price.
8274s are very simple and reliable but expensive.
I would avoid the cheapies from Ebay, allways pay by credit card as you have far better consumer rights if you have a problem
These are my own opinions gained when I used to flog and fix them.
Remember it will come in handy even if you never use it

I you have an elecy winch then you should have a tirfor or mechanical winch anyway, as backup.

Or just get a hi lift jack and use that as a winch... Slow but quite effective really
