Not good news
« on: July 19, 2005, 19:27:42 »
Well, I've had a call from 'Uncle' George at the Landy hothdiggle, and the news is not good  : in addition to a FUBAR rear diff bearing, I've also managed to twist both rear half shafts too   - trouble is, his regular parts supplier quoted £115 (for the short side!! ) and doesn't carry 2nd hand ones, as apparently they "never break" - we know different to that, don't we children??
It's £15 for series H/S, and there's a whole half bloody inch difference in length!!

Now, the question is, does anyone know of a decent supplier who does 90 half shafts for less than a 2nd mortgage, and can get them delivered to Leicestershire for Thursday? Apparently the price depends on chassis/axle serial No.- chassis no I have on my logbook, but axle no is...... on the axle, which is on HL, who is not here - hopefully, I'll be able to get it later tonight or tomorow. Frustrating or what?? If anyone has any helpful ideas, please bring 'em on!!

(BTW, they are 10/24 spline; I also need end caps)

Thanks peeps!
Janie.

http://www.land-rover-parts-shop.com/shop/en/

Put your model and year in there... and it ought to give you the right one.
Failing that, PM me with your reg details and I can probably give you the right part number.

For 115 quid, you can get HD shafts !

Are they floating or semi floating shafts? I've a pair of semi floating r/r - disco style rear shafts in the shed if they're any use.

I have made use of http://www.partsgateway.co.uk quite a few times since having my Discovery

Enter the part(s) you are looking for and a number of breakers will come back with quotes (if they've got it). No commitment - if the price suits you buy - if not you don't!

well, I'm in the middle of shopping; that's an excellent site Tim, thanks very much for the link - it's in my bookmarks now!! :D !!!! and have found the half shafts for a far less frightening price!
Now, at the risk of having missed something totally obvious; the two 'diff flanges' (these  are  the same as 'drive flanges' aren't they?) https://www.land-rover-parts-shop.com/shop/en/browse/Defender+90/2/1993/17/60/161 -how do I know which one I need, as they do look quite diff-erent (ahem   ) but the application numbers are the same!!!:(stoopid):  - is one heavier duty? Has it the ability to trap more mud in that nice dished bit? I.R confuzzled!!
Any ideas chaps??
Steve, I've no idea about their bouyancy; I've never had them out, so axles are a whole new area of exploration to me; and I'm not even doing it myself cos I've got no bl@@dy time!! :(  but thanks for the offer anyway! :)

ah read properly this time. If you need end caps you've fully floating half shafts so sorry my spares won't fit without changing the hubs. Good luck.

Janie..

Those are the input flange for the differential.. not the drive flanges on the end of the axle

The differences there are in the suffix of thepart number which denotes the type of part...  roughly speaking :

a GEN suffix is a Genuine LR part
a G suffix is an OE part (branded original equipment but not LR brand - this includes things like Lockheed, etc.)
a dot (.) suffix is an OEM part - made by the same manufacturer as the OE parts, but not the ones supplied to LR... generally bought in bulk and badged by the wholesaler

Well, the half shafts were out of stock; coming in today and going straight out to George for a before 10.30 delivery tomorrow. Trouble is, I've been working like a trojan, been stuck without wheels, and had no chance to get anything ready for the weekend, and by the time I've paid the bill I'll probably be skint! So it is with heavy heart that I've decided I won't be making the birthday bash  :(bigcry): I know you'll all have great fun, and I wish I was going too  :(
Oh, well; next year.........<sniffle>

Neil, that is incredibly kind of you!!!! Thank you so much!!! :(bigsmile): <hugs> However, I will sadly decline; I've been burning the candle at both ends recently, and there's not a lot of wax left,:(bloodshot):  I think I need to use this weekend to catch up on things like laundry, food shopping and sleep. I think the 'silly season' has caught up with me early this year; must be getting old!
