Health And Safety Survailance Officer.....
« on: July 21, 2005, 20:46:08 »
:( I used to enjoy my job until today.

You see a bloke i work with who has been with the company many years and in the printing industry for nearly 30 years has been on a 3 day comprehensive Heath and Safety Survailance course. This man before the course was a carefree no rules laidback sort of guy...... Not Anymore
As soon as i turned up for work this morning he was on my case. Wheres your highviz bib, dont do that dont do this etc etc...
Before i do anything in the warehouse ive now got to do an assesment before i carry out the task ive been told to do ie this could be from getting a cup of coffee    to lifting a pallet with the pallet truck... ie RISK ASSESMENT/POSSIBLE DANGERS TO MYSELF OR OTHERS.
He followed me to the brew machine and watched me carry back a hot cup of coffee to the dispatch area then asked me a load of questioned about what could have happened and the risks to do with carrying a cup of coffee    At first i thought he was jokeing cos that is what he or was like. But no he was deadly serious. All i wanted was a dam brew before i started work, and that was just the start of it... I then picked up a box.. STOP He shouted what are you doing put it down, so i did. He went on saying. How did you know how much it weighed before lifting it. He then showed me in great detail how to test its weight before picking it up etc and how to lift it
OK Hes only trying to look after my health, and i do appriciate it. But this was a bit extreme... i mean everything i had to do today was scrutinised
Now im from the old school of just get on with it, so long as the job is done right and on time, everyones happy. Not anymore the job has now slowed right down and even the boss has commented on it, but my work mate has more power than him now and can if he wanted to stop production at anytime if he is not happy with Health and Safety in the workplace. The bosses hands are tied.
My workmate has turned into a little hitler overnight and he knows it, it is getting everyone down but now its inplace we are powerless to do anything about it. Thats how serious this Goverment Backed H/A/S/S Officer thing is.
Dont get me wrong Health and Safety in the workplace is a good thing... but i dont like being told how to suck eggs. Whats next plastic scissors
If in first you dont suceed, try second....
If it aint broke, your not trying ard enough....

It's already like that in the NHS.

If a member of staff tries to sue them for anything, their first line of
defence would be;

 Yeah your right, apparently ive got to sign something after ive been on a one day lifting course and risk assesment course.
Nothing to do with my personal safety. Its just once ive signed any injury or accident to me i cant turn round and cry COMPO....

And to be honest im against compo claims, the system is a wash with dubious claims putting our and our employers insurance up throught the roof.
Heres an example. A couple of months ago i stood on a nail at work, ok it hurt for a phew days, but if ide have had my eyes open properly i would have seen it. The boss was scared stiff incase i put in a ridiculous claim, i did not.
Now some people will think "you idiot why not claim". Simple answer i would have been proberly sacked eventually, and anyway i was not wearing proper toetectors so it would have been laughed out of court, and then sacked.

And look whats happened. Health and Safety Survailance. Its everywere now even in the home... cant do this cant do that.
If in first you dont suceed, try second....
If it aint broke, your not trying ard enough....

Damn crazy all this HSE lark. At work we have a hi-viz vest hung in the garage gathering dust in case we get checked  , and Mike, youve seen the size of our yard and garage - not exactly large is it  . Next thing is painted walkways, all this for 2 full time employees

Health and safety dosnt apply in schools (mad innit) but take some kids out of school and you should see the paperwork

We have a RA for making hot drinks. As there is a door on the kitchen tea should be made by 2 people so that one can open the door and one can carry the drinks. Now we need 2 tea boys not just one

None of you work for D_po_t then........

For D_po_t employees this extra care extends to life outside of work. If you have an accident at home it has to be reported at work and the same lengthy paperwork carried out to make sure you weren't being careless. You are expected to do risk assessments for all tasks at home too.

:D One good thing about all this nonsence....
I went shopping with the boss this afternoon ( in my dinner hour of course git ) to a workware and warehouse suppliers.
:D  8) Got a new pair of Catterpillar Toetectors, complete new uniform trousers t shirts jumpers etc, winter coat that turns into a bodywarmer with high-viz stripeing, winter gloves 2 types, fingerless and tough rope tying ones ?  and 2 high-viz bibs one for work one for the rangie when out laning or on pay and play sites  :D  And a full set of ratchet straps for my van..... cough Rangie    Total bill £ 275.00 inc vat. Cheers boss, or should that be, There goes my christmas bonus  :(

He also bought a load of stuff for the warehouse ie high-viz floor tape, warning stickers and plackards better lighting for the yard and floor paint to mark out the unloading areas and staker truck area. Bill god knows a lot a think....

Also next week a firm is comeing in to erect a steel walkway inside warehouse for people to walk through and outside running along the outer walls so people wont get run over by wagons, staker trucks..... and my Rangie

  As a Safety Officer, I too would have to admit that sometimes the RA is taken to the extreme, however, peoples stupidity is also taken to the extreme, eg: a woman who comes to work in a Global distribution centre with loads of pallet and fork trucks around in flip-flops, because it's a hot day and thought it would be okay as her boots would be hot.

As for the guy where you work...a small bit of power..blah..blah....

We're all not that bad.

Hmmmmmmm health and safety.
Needed in certain circumstances but seems to be getting well out of hand. My only concern is where will it end?
Marshalled at the event in LRE and one event had one of the guys being sent out along a rope and lowered with the winch. One of the competitiors said " my winch isnt rated for people"
I can understand his comment in these times as you wouldn't want suing for misuse of equipment that led to injury.
Our common passtime can be extremely dangerous. When you are working on your car or out enjoying a hard greenlane there are times when you are taking a chance.I would hate the busy bodies to get their teeth into my private life, what i choose to risk is my affair as long as i harm no-one else.

Often the worst offenders are the best after training, poacher turned gamekeeper, give him time and it'll ease a bit.

RISK ASSESMENT/POSSIBLE DANGERS TO MYSELF OR OTHERS.

Putting my union safety rep's hat on, R.A.s can ONLY be PROPERLY carried out by those trained to do it, it is the managements responsiblity to make sure R.A.s are done and the person doing them is appropriately trained/experienced.

My workmate has turned into a little hitler overnight and he knows it, it is getting everyone down but now its inplace we are powerless to do anything about it. Thats how serious this Goverment Backed H/A/S/S Officer thing is.

Go to the HSE website and read the basics, then start asking him questions about it.....Few trained/appointed safety people actually know what the law actually requires, IOSH members however.

Niel.

Had a Health and Safety inspection last week at my business. A rather attractive young lady turned up ( :D ) and was very helpful. Pointed out a few minor areas we should improve and is due to write to us to confirm. I do hope she comes back to confirm we have carried out the recommendations ........ I know, how shallow am I????
