Whilst on my 'Out & About. Friday 12th July', I passed this pub; The Spite
I'd quote forgotten about it & the story behind it.

My Father is telling me there is a pub called the Spite And Malice 'round 'ere somwhere but he can't remember quite where.

we have a pub on Margate seafront called the "Mechanical Elephant"

because many years ago there use to be a huge mechanical elephant that carried children for rides up and down the beach.........way before my time.

It's quite an unusual name so i thought it was worthy of a post. :roll:

One down the road from me is called the swinger

It dates back to the old trams that operated in Nottingham, it was the terminus point for the busses at the city boundary, it was where the drivers swung the connecting arms of the tram round to drive it back the other way.

Until a few years ago it was called the Forest Hotel, but with it being nicknamed the Swinger for so long it was actually renamed to that.

Ironically the new trams that run into Nottingham still pass the old pub, but no stopping there now

One of my pet hates is the new naming of older pubs, I'm the same dont gon into them nowadays, but still dont like the practice, its amazing if you ask for directions how many people use pubs as reference points :lol:

Would that be the same one that featured in the Jeremy Clarkson 'Extreme Machines' series?

Kevin. I'll agree on the renaming of pubs, it loses their local identity. The name (as you state) often implies a feature from the area.

There's one in Church Fenton (Near the old RAF base) & I heard the landlord wanted to rename in.

There used to be one in Wakefield called the 'Talbot & Falcon'.
A referance to hunting (dogs & birds)

About 10 years ago it changed its name to the silly Ferret & Lettuce (or whatever)

Now it's the 'Talbot' again.

Within a reasonable distance from me there's a 'Hark To Mopsy', a real old hunting term.

With silly names in mind again.
In Keighley there is, or was, a 'Rat & Ratchet'

In Dewsbury (Ravensthorpe) there was a 'Flying Pig' (in a Superman outfit on the sign), it got renamed I believe

I used to drink in a pub near Petersfield in Hampshire that didn't have a name, the sign outside was missing and I'm not sure if it ever had a name but of course everyone called it...

"The pub with no name"

So I suppose it did have a name.

Confused?

Then I have never quite got my head round the small tarn called "Innominate Tarn" in the Lake District (think about it)!

No website, but I did find out where it was:

Map here - A place called Priors Dean (but that isn't listed on Streetmap or Multimap)

If you zoom in to 1:50,000 there seems to be loads of byways round there, must be worth a return visit (Haven't been there for 15 years myself) :D

There is also a "Pub with No Name" in Brighton so maybe not so unusual after all.

When we lived in Rochester in Kent our local was the "Who`d a thought it"
Never seen another one! Spelling may have been a little more olde worlde, cant remember now.

My old local was originally the 'Welcome Inn' - the locals called it the 'Blazing Rag' as many years ago its where the fox hunt started from and they used to burn the rag with the fox scent on the open fire. Years later it was renamed 'The Blazing Rag'. How true I dont know - I'm off to read my local pub history book :D

You are not too far away. It's by Betws-y-Coed which is inland from Conway (next to Penmaenmawr).

There are two other "Who'd of thought it" pubs,
one in Devon at Milton Coombe,
one in Cornwall at St.Dominick.
Theres always "The Elephant's Nest" at Mary Tavy.
