Taking a V8 Swimming

Bit addicted to taking my disco 1 V8 swimming, but ignition system is ruining all my fun.  Any ideas for waterproofing it ? Did think of a latex glove on the distributor but cant even find an 8 fingered glove on ebay which surprises me  :lol:

Anything else I should be thinking about before going any deeper ?

You can get custom built latex gloves to fit over a V8 dizzy - we used one on our V8 110 in Iceland, but took it off after a short time because it seemed to be keeping the water in, not out.

What a bout some sort of Heat shrink? if you can get that stuff big enough?

one of the more creative suggestions is to buy a small 12v air compressor for a fishtank or similar and to blow water into the distributor (via a small hole, a pipe and a lot of sealant)  this will theoretically pressurize the dizzy and just let air out of it when submerged (but you're pumping more in so it shouldn't get wet)

seen this in operation - it does work!

however they blow air into it not water Daz!!!

I said air would come out of it and you were pumping more in, I meant more air, but whatever takes your fancy I suppose...

WD40 would be funny ;)

i did this to my v8and works well just make shore you put the intake from the pump up high   :shock:

Wurth chain lube oil works wonders on a V8. Just spray it around (while everything is dry. You don't want to seal damp in that's already there) the dizzy and leads.


I've never used this company for it nor habe any knowledge of them but they sell the product.

I have NO shielding or anything like that on my V8 & gad it in very deep without missing a beat,(had water spraying out between the wings & bonnet & also up to the seats inside)

all i did was fit the coil in a asda ice cream tub with a snap lid,remove the leads & clean with thinners or brake cleaner then soak them in wd40,remove & clean the cap the same way till its spotless & put a bead around the bottom of sillycone grease & refit & away you go

one of the key points (and I'm sure nelly would agree) is perhaps to get a *good* dizzy cap and leads,  sure they might be more expensive but they seem to fit better....

I have done the same with the leads but covered the dizzy and coil with the material used to cover earth before gravel goes down. Stops the weeds but lets air through.

Sprayed this in WD40. When it gets wet the water runs off, if any gets in then it allows it to dry off as it is semi pourous. works great on the dizzy.

had water up to the bonnet.

oh and a snorkel and wading kit.

if you want the dizzy cover it is here. i bought it but found it really difficult to fit. Their wading kit is good though and they do great pricing on snorkels. nice family company

Well... the best way is to have a V8 without a distributor  8)

But..  when I had my old Series 3 V8 I did the following :

1) Remove the fixed fan... it just sprays water everywhere.
2) Fit an electric fan with override switch
3) Relocate coil inside the cabin up on the dash. (Harder on a Disco of course, so sealing it in a box is worthwhile)
4) If they are old.. fit new plugs, leads and dizzy cap
5) Coat the leads and cap with some form of waterproofing gunk... chain grease is good as mentioned.


When I had an EFi in Tigger.. the above all applied, but I also had the ECU in the cabin too.


You should also consider :

1) Extending your axle and gearbox breather pipes
2) A raised air intake


I avoided things like dizzy covers.. because in my experience they keep water in as well as out.

Now have a 200tdi in it !

after enquiring on here i have cut the end off an old 5 litre plastic container and tied it down over the dizzy cap, i was sceptical of this idea to begin with but it does work :D  i can whizz thru water now without the fear of getting wet feet(as i walk to shore looking for a tow)
the container deflects any water that hits it from the fan as i havent removed it yet

My mate green Meany has that too.
Bag over the dizzy and a cut up bottle protecting from water.
Works well.

how about getting a car tyre innertube and slicing it up as to make your nine fingerd glove and glueing it together with puncture repair kit as required

if this fails change to tdi
