Transfer box tardis
« on: August 21, 2005, 07:55:13 »
Did the oil part of the 24k service yesterday so new fluids all round.  Now the main gearbox took exactly the amount it should and then a dribble comes out of the filler hole.  But the transfer box took around to 4.5 litres and Ive checked the manual a few times now and I'm sure it's meant to be 2.8 litres    Am I not meant to fill it until it dribbles out of the filler hole like the main box? Am I looking forward to 1.7 litres of EP80w90 slowly leaking out under the car over the next few weeks?  :?
Cheers
James

I checked the procedure again and it seems that you are meant to fill the transfer box until a steady dribble from the filler.  So how the hell have I managed to get 4.5 litres in there

well,  I'm not entirely sure, but there *could* be cause for concern.

In the days of the series the seals twixt gearbox and transfer box were prone to failing effectively making them one unit.  I don't know if this is true of the discovery, but given that the two require different types of oil I would suggest it is worth checking that your stray 2l didn't end up in the gearbox.

i think i no what might be the problem,

what plug did you use to fill the transfer box??? the 1 on the rear behind the handbrake drum to the left or the 1 near the top On the left hand side??

if the 1 on the rear you have a problem internally & its allowing the oil to go somewhere its not ment to But if its the 1 at the top its the wrong hole youve got so over filed it,discovvered this on a discovery that had been serviced by a "landrover trained" mechanic & it had been filled in the wrong hole

I think I filled through the one on the top left   Certainly wasn't on the rear by the handbrake drum.  Ok, so probably good news.  I guess I should open the proper one then and let the excess drain out .  Can any damage be caused by overfilling the transfer box

the only damage that "could" happen is if you have been running it & it will be pushing oil out through the seals as there is no room inside for it to expand,it shouldnt have caused any long term damage that i can think of except to your pride when you tell folk about the day you filled the tbox through the wrong hole

to remidy the problem remove the correct plug( 1/2 inch drive) & alow ther excess oil to eith land in pre postioned container or run up your sleeve    8)

And the second one is more accessible :)

A new set of handbrake shoes aren't cheap if it's taken the rear seal out. Hopefully you didn't take it on a long run.

A mile at under 40 mph.  I'll drain the excess in the morning.

Rain stopped and I managed to get the excess 1.7 litres of EP90 back out of the transfer box.  Trying to get the plug back in when it was covered in EP90 was the most fun I've had in ages (got a laugh about these things   ).

I had some problems while on hoiday in Wales. Started losing t box oil. So like the clever ass that I am I decided it was neccesary to check the oil half way back to home as there were some unwelcome sounds off the box (slight whine).

Not a good idea.

1st the filler plug is pretty hot.
Second the oil had expanded and quite a bit of hot oil bubbled out. The plug was also damn hot when I tried to replace it.

Would it have killed them to position the filler plug just 3mm to the left so that you could get a 1/2" extension drive in there past the handbrake drum

You can get a 1/2" ratchet in until it's loose enough to get it off with your fingers.

That's fine when removing it.  But refitting of oily plug with oily finger is a laugh and a half
