Transfer box changing
« on: August 23, 2005, 19:42:51 »
This thread has probebly been done before but i have to ask.....
I've just bought a 1.410 ratio transfer box for my disco (different ratio. Its because i'm running 31" rubber, soon to be 35")
I've never done anything like this before.
Is it hard to change?
Should i replace any other parts whilst its out?
What parts will i require?
IS THE JOB HARD??????
Anyone fancy giving me a hand?
I collect on Friday and i'll want to fit it asap.
Tea and breakfast up for grabs

The hardest part of the job is that it is a big lump of metal.  Otherwise it is a spanner job.

You might need to undo the gearbox mounts and drop it down a bit to get the handbrake assembly past the floor panels...  last Disco txfr box I did was on a V8 auto, so it might be different on yours.

Take a good look at the input gear on the transfer box and look for wear on the inside splines.  They are about 45 quid from Ashcroft.

Just take your time... and be methodical.  You can do it in a day but if it takes 2 then don't sweat.   It takes a bit longer than on a 90 because you have thigs like a floor that doesn't just lift out of the way ;-)

Thanks Tim
Time is'nt a problem because Big Blue's my second motor.
I'd rather get it right than **ck it up!!
Is there any way of checking the operation of the box proir to fitting?

With enough hands you can check the operation of the diff lock.  You can also check for a lot of play in the box and check that the high / low ratios are working.  You just need the right combination of wiggling on the output flanges ;-)

Ebay

patience of a saint!
I've been watching loads over the last year and they've all made silly money.
I was following this one for 7 days and no one bidded.
So i won it for 99p + £20 to get it to Southampton from the Isle Of Wight. All i've got to do is collect it from the docks. Easy, i'm down there quite often!
Not bad really. I hope its ok!
If not i'll use it as part ex for a recon one from Ashcrofts.

Good on you Jake...
I thought mine was  bargain at 70 odd quid on ebay. Got it off a MC member.

If you're doing it on the drive it can be fun. We managed it with an old style pram and some plywood to move it around underneath and some intricate jacking of the vehicle with axle stands. All of a sudden it jumped into place. Might have been more down to Bev's aim than anything else.

There are a couple of hard to get to bolts. A good look at the new one helps you to locate them all.

Give us a bell next time you're this way, we should meet up for a pint or something (not that I drink, but lemonade is always good and the pub over the way do a mean plate of nachos)
