As I understand it, to qualify for a disabled 'blue badge' you have to be physically disabled.  I'm not sure of the definition, but it's summut like not being able to walk more than 'X' metres unaided.

Other disabilities entitle you to disability living allowance but not a blue badge to park in disabled spaces.  So if your deaf or dyslexic(SP!! )  Ya still have to park with the rest of us.

Hummm, as a disabled person who's been through the mill all I can add is get citizens advice involved ASAP when applying, they even have direct telephone numbers/e-mail addresses to the snivil sir-vents administering the schemes. Even then if they think your not from a suitable back-ground (loads-a-money for legal help or supported ethnicity for legal help) you may still not get DLA or a blue badge....
My employer grants me a disabled parking permit, but no guranteed bay at same cost as everyone elses normal bay, IF I had a blue badge my parking at work would be free.
One of the reasons I drive a land-rover is the seating posistion with a "back-friend" is better for me than any normal car.

As far as lazy B'tards parking in marked bays goes, well you don't expect them to walk if they can avoid it do you!

Niel.

Yep, the uni is supposed to use the money for security etc, but it gets lost along the way rather....

They have a capped amount of spaces, the city council enforces it ruthlessly, even though the uni is the biggest local employer in the city, and to encourage use of p/t unilink etc we pay to park, those that live within 3 miles apply for permits, but rarely get them, unless disabled or business needs require a car. Stoodense unless they live within the city to start with may not bring a vehicle to uni at all, unless disabled, during their first year.

so annoyed to see so many able bodied persons parking in the disabled bays

As a parent, I get pee'd off finding bloody disabled drivers in the Child & Parent parking.  When questioned the other day, some old coffin dodger simply replied "I've got a disabled badge, I can park where I like", then scurried off quicker than ferret up a drain pipe.

Disabled drivers are not always the victims, however many do have the stickers and don't actually need them (not all, just some).  I waited in the car at Tesco a couple of weeks ago, and watched as over a dozen "disabled" badge holders parked up, and walked into the store without limp, stress or fatigue.  In fact, most walked better than I do!

Bottom line - my Father-in-Law has a disabled sticker in his car.  His disability?  His hearing.  [Edited]???

A disabled sticker is different to a blue badge.  A sticker don't give you the right to park in a disabled space, it's to warn other road users that the driver of the car has a disability.

I have to agree though, I've seen plenty of people with badges who don't seem to have any problems walking!!!!  It really anoys SWMBO to see someone dive into the last space, put up their badge and then hop out and jog into the shops!!!!

She can only walk a short distance without a stick and even then has to stop for rests, and she certainly can't carry anything heavy.  It's people like her who rely on disabled parking to carry on their life as normally as possble.

I just wish other people would think about that before abusing disabled parking.

I think some have missed an important point.

Just because someone doesn't have a limp doesn't mean they shouldn't be entitled to park with the badges.

There are some of us out there with barely no visible disability unless we're seen on a really bad day (and then we don't drive). Heart and lung disabilities might not be apparent.

Also I think you will find that many councils are now taking the easy route ant using the Mobility part of DLA as a pre requisite to getting a Blue badge. If you are entitled to the full rate then they will automatically process (and give) the application with no covering letter from a GP or consultant.

So a person with mental health difficulties that meets the criteria for the mobility component can obtain a blue badge.

Not at all.
I'm pretty laid back about these things. I get enough trouble from other blue badge holders because I don't limp.

So some days I just limp! :)

Same here. Like 'Snowie' we pay, but at at reduced rate in comparison to visitors/out-patients.

I think I pay about £1.60 a week, but without a payslip in front of me, I can't be certain

When I used to work in Leicester royal I used to get free parking. Just had to get my ticket "zapped" at security. The last time I was there the rottwieller woman on duty refused to zap it for me. I offered to bring her the remains of the barrier when she got stroppy about it. She couldn't grasp the concept that if she insisted on charging me the £3 to park then I would invoice the hospital at least £23 for the privilege. Had to get her supervisor to talk sense to her in the end. Silly girl. Luckily I don't have to go there any more.
Cheers, Karl..
