how big?

this may have been covered before but!!!
i have a 90 and its on it old 6.00 16 tryes, what size can i go to using the standard rims.
or what is the biggest wheels and tryes i can fit with out any mods.
any advise please

7.50x16 - nothing wider on the standard rims.

As for the biggest without mod..... IIRC 255/85x16 and the imperial equivelents will go on with suitable wheels, but watch for offset on the rims.

if you are fitting 255/85x16 then if you are going offroad then you will need to trim the arches very slightly use extended bump stops (mine hit the top of the inner wing on the rear) and maybe give the motor a lift.

thanks for the help so far.
i was thinking  of 235.85 16 would these fit ok with no mods?
i am not sure which rims to buy any advise, how wide would they need to be?

Your not alone in that belief - Many peeps told me that 255s would go with no mods so it seems to be some sort of widespread rumour.

I have had to chop the plastic arches at the bottoms to stop them hitting as well as chop an exhaust bracket back on the rear silencer - there is also evidence of the tyres hitting the tops of the rear inner arches so ext bumpstops would cure that  - thinking about it I dont think a suspension lift would make much difference??!!??

It could be a lot worse - it could had been 235s onto a disco !!!!!

I'd still run with the extended bumpstops with the 255s if theres a risk of rubbing - just thinking about coilbinding makes me cringe!

I havent got any yet but will either extend my own an inch or so, or get some cheapies from paddocks

I had 235's on standard rims but thought they looked a bit wide for the rim so i changed em for rostyles.  90 with 235/85 and rostyles is as pretty as it gets (IMHO)!  Aint there a problem with wolf rims making some 90's need longer studs?

go for BFG MTs or Goodyear Wrangler MTRs

not sure which is best but you cant go wrong with either.

right thats the tyres sorted ,now for the rims....

7" modulars or eight spokes have a good offset and will ensure that they fill the arches nice - they are normally around £30 each

They're probabkly the best except maybe mach 5's.  Just make sure they'll fit before you buy em.  They're expensive as well!

I'll argue the Mach 5 thing (even if they are sooooooo pretty) - the Wolf rim is proof tested to double the rating of the standard rim and are 6.5" wide. I've run 235/85x16 on Wolfs for yonks and I'm very pleased. The rims even survived an Audi attack early on.

They are heavy though.

If you go for modulars - go grey - they look like a standard Landy product, only wider.

Depending on the breed of your Defender theres always steel Disco 1 rims.

I never bent a rim till i got modulers, i'v busted too at Tixover now.
maybe it's just the mud faires dont like modulars  :roll:

These are my Goodyear MTR, 265/75/16 on black modulars. I think they suit the vehicle and have caused me no issues as of yet. No sign of any rubbing anywhere and they get you where you need to go.
