Battle Of Britain Memorial Sculpture
« on: September 03, 2005, 21:23:48 »
I've seen this fantastic & long overdue piece in 'The Daily Mail' this morning.

As is usual in these cases, so-called public art (rocks, unmade beds, piles of bricks, etc..) get money thrown at them, this one has received what from the Government & the National Lottery?

Yes, the grand sum of....... nothing :!:
Bl**dy Typical.
The few (less than 3,000) pilots offered their lives for us & Blairs lot can't even offer a few quid

Even the Czech government donated (I think) £52,000

And what a fantatsic sculpture it is, undoubtedly worthy of praise, unlike some recent memorials that I could mention

Why?

There's a Spitfire being shot down on it.

Oh........ There's no French soldier with his arms in the air.
 :? It needs redesigning

Stuff politically correct. It's history, millions died so we could keep our freedom today.

It's about time people realised just what they gave for us.

 As to the french, there flag is designed wiht perforations between the colours, help ripping the red and blue away quicker for the fast white flag

Reminds the germans of the fact they lost.It would basicly go along the lines of us not letting the war lie etc.

Dont think I would chose the spitfire. I would rather the focus on the pilots/aircrews who laid down there lives, although can see that as an easily identifable symbol the spit would be a good choice
I think it is about time that we had something as a perminant reminder of the battle of britan after all as it's been said these men gave there lives so we could be free.

The why the Spitfie when the Hurricane did most of the work?

And talking of the c***y modern art rubbish, did anyone see the pile of old railway sleepers that we paid for as a monument to Winston Churchill after he was voted the greatest briton

One thing there is that is not as often sung as the pilots and aircraft is the ground crew behind them, nice to see them in there too, that is what my father was doing back then
