Quirky Cooling

Something quirky appears to be going on with my cooling system. (TD5 Disco ES)

First driving home from work this morning I set the heater (climate control) up a couple of degrees to 22c. The system decided to blow really cold airat me instead.

Then this afternoon I went for a short drive of about 5 miles and when I stooped the radiator fan ran on for a while. I checked the coolant level and it is up to the mark.

The same thing happened this evening short drive and the fan is running when I stop. To my knowledge it’s never done that before in the 3 years I’ve had the car.
Also just lately I’ve noticed the coolant warning light flash on briefly from time to time.
Anyone got any ideas.

Check the coolent level when the engine is cold and top up if requred.

As for the fans, could they be the fans for the air-con and not the engine cooling fan?  :?
If not then have you noticed any change in the engine temp', if not then maybe a duff sensor somewhere in the system.

Dont mean to panic you but check it carefully.  The TD5 disco of a mate of mine was doing EXACTLY the same.

Topped up the coolant, checked this and that.  There was the tinyiest coolant leak so every month it needed a tiny top up but it wasnt leaking on the floor.

Finally turned out this TD5 had plastic dowels in the head and they had distorted, needed the new metal dowles and a head gasket.

Its probably not that on yours but worth checking because if the dowels have distorted they will eventually snap and then your stuffed, new TD5 head and thats £2K!

Thanks for the info. I’ll keep that in mind. It dose need a little top up once in a while. I was thrown this time by not checking the level thoroughly. The level appeared to be up to the mark but it was only the stain from the antifreeze.
It is curious that it only needed a small amount to bring it up again yet was clearly low enough to prevent the heater from functioning.
