LPG on a diesel

i've been looking at converting my diesel series 3 to run on an diesel/LPG mix. These people do a kit for non turbo diesels priced at £350 +vat. (turbo kits from £400+vat

You'll just have to slum it and use the ferry  :lol:

Actually, I prefer the ferry but the Tunnel is a very fast, easy, way to cross the Channel.

How available is LPG? Obviously, I don't look for it, but I can't say I've ever seen it for sale!? :-k

I used to have a LPG company car, I bought from WHSmiths a monthly mag, something along the lines of LPG Car and it gave a section in the back with ALL the filling stations in it sorted by area.

It wasn't a thrilling read, so I only bought one, but it proved to be an indispensable bible for the glove box.

So, what are the chances that any petrol station will have LPG? Are we talking 90% country coverage? 20%?

I assume that you can just run on diesel (petrol) if the LPG runs out?

In MK every other one sells LPG, its more common than you think.

LPG on a diesel is used in addition to the diesel fuel, as opposed to instead of.

It's added at up to 10% fuel volume.

So a maximum of 10% of the fuel you burn is cheaper LPG and the kit costs 350. Bearing in mind it will need to be checked and signed off by someone certified (otherwise your insurance people will be less than impressed), I really can't see the point.

Having said that, it can be used as the diesel equivelent of nitrous to provide an alrming boost in performance when required. Bearing in mind the type of engine it's going to be run it, again, I really can't see the point.

My advice - save your pennies.

I have a friend that was in that line of business for a while.

They took a 98 bhp Sprinter van up to 180 bhp using LPG. :shock:  

....but not for long............... #-o

having read all sorts of articles, and spoke to several retailers, it looks like a good idea. what they say is that the extra lpg (about 10% in relation to the diesel) is ignited by the diesel burning, but then the LPG causes more of the diesel to be burnt (older diesels only burn about 70% of what goes through the injector)
this then gives a much better burn, and so more power.
the fuel savings come from the bigger bang causing you to need less right foot to get the same power output from the engine.
anything up to 30% total fuel savings is possible.

as for LPG stations, i drive past 1 every day :)
and i know of another 4 not far from where i live :D

theres no reason why you cant fit NOS to a diesel :)

LPG is still relativly rare by us. I only know of one place selling it within a couple of miles (out of 30-40 filling stations?) and they charge 44p a litre. I have been told of one about 15 miles away that is selling it for 28p.

It is also possable to use propane camping cylinders so refills come from the camping shops BUT you have the inconveniance of filling out all the forms for HC&E so you pay all the correct tax

this may help in your search,they will send you a free map showing all the filling stations and service centres in the country.I've been using my map forover 8 months now as duck runs only on LPG.
by the way there were diesel mercedes sprinters running on lpg 5 years ago,the lpg kits came from either sweden on norway my memory is a bit vaige on the country of origine but it was from that area

a test using cooking oil, in France, covered over 60,000 miles (prob Km) without any problems
