having vibration problems at 50 mph plus

but the strange thing is that it only appears when you let off the throttle

then you can hear as well as feel the metallic vibration noise

i have a wide angle front prop  with extended shaft

the shaft is 73mm and since putting on the radius arms for castor correction the shaft has come out by 51 mm

the ujs are fine and are new

when i give the prop a good wiggle there is no play

but there is play in the front of the transfer box where the prop connects

i know that i need to be putting on a double cardon

anyone know where to start with a 200 tdi

confused mike

If you've lifted and castor corrected you need a Cardan jointed shaft, the pulsing caused by the top uj will find all the play in your transmission, wherever it is.  It happens on coasting or overun because the torque of driving keeps thing tightened up, it's the backlash you are feeling and there's always going to be some.  Also the front prop stretches with the QT arms because they are longer to account for the arc of the arm as it swings down, they reinstate the wheelbase.

That play in the transfer box will eventually become a leak.

Had the same thing on mine when I fitted the caster correction radius arms, although I could feel it right through the speed range. Fitted the Carden prop and no more vibration.  :D

One thing though, there should be a small amount of play on the transfer box front output flange, I've just fitted a 1.41 ratio box from Ashcrofts and that has the same amout of play in it as the one I took out!!
Mind you, the pulsing from the front prop will not be helping the bearing and it will damage it in the end.
If you don't have the money/time to get a Carden prop yet then you may be better off putting the standard radius arms back on for now.  :?

It's about £170 + VAT for the prop & transfer box flange from Devon 4x4, unless you can find a TD5 Disco in a scrappy!!  :?

Have you looked to see if the prop uj's are aligned properly, my new rangey was vibrating just like that, only at speed, and if you let the throttle off, looked in under, and the front prop was about 35 degrees out on the splines, worse bit, i bought it from a Land Rover trained mechanic.

Trouble is Lofty, they are supposed to be like that. Check the other thread on here, *front U/J* I think.

You can do the front bearing on the transfer box without taking the box out but it is a pig of a job and entails removing the front output housing which then is as bad a job as removing the whole box and doing it on the bench.

Usually if the front bearing is a problem it (in my case at least) takes out the output flange seal in double quick time. I did my bearing and out it all back together. It made no difference to the oscillations on the propshaft.

I've ended up putting the old radius arms back on, which throws the castor angle out, while I sourse a double cardon prop and flange.

Yes I'm still getting to grips with that one myself.  Thing is when you lift the front of the car that offset in the UJs has to change anyway....It's all rather complicated :(bloodshot):

Cardan is the way to go.

Now if we could move the t box further back to even out the length of both propshafts.....
The rear one laughs at the lift because it's longer. MMmmmmm 130 Disco?
Only joking.... I think... You'd need lonmg legs to get to the pedals...

But both props are roughly the same length as the respective radius arms, by design.  Oddly though tis would help balance the front UJ angles.

Best left to the Bolwer Tomcats though I think.

well it wasnt the output bearing  :x  my pocket now £90 lighter and i've still got the vibration

Its going back in tomorrow for the new prop to be replaced with a new prop beause i'm sure the new prop they fitted was a duffer, if i pack the ujs with grease it doesnt vibrate for a mile or so then it comes back

wish me luck

Are we talking about the same thing, i was always taught that they should be lined up, if not, why not??
If they should be disaligned, then i shall change it back again.
This is the front prop on a classic range rover.
