fitting 35" tyres on a disco

I've got a 1.41 ratio transfer box (to be fitted)
Still got to buy the tyres  :oops:
I will be fitted D4x4 arches and a set of lovely Mach 5's
Its already lifted 2" but i've got some 1" spacers to go on too

What else do i need to change?
Diffs?
Props?
Help please.

A body lift woud be a good idea, used lots on the Zuks, doesnt screw up prop angle etc or lift the CofG but will give you more room under the arches

How hard is body lifting a disco?
I've seen a few about but it looks like quite a big job

my body is lifted by an inch if you get the spacers made it is as simple as  lifting up putting new spacer under and refixing with longer bolts the only probs is when all the bolts are siezed solid as where mine :D

changing tyres leads to a whole string of changes longer than dna

i dont know what width tyre your putting on but the arches will definatly need cutting for the extended arch flares

this will also involve taking a considerable amount off the rear door

i will assume you will have to lengthen the bump stops or lift it more

as you know i have plus three springs and 1 inch spacers(4 inch lift),,,,

with my 33 inch tyres i only just miss the inner arch with the inner edge of the tyre at the rear at full articulation(and with the offset i run the discs are almost paralell with the inner wheel rim)

until i fitted the castor corrected radius arms and 4 inch lift at the front ,,,i kept hitting the front inner arches (especially the side near the doors)

now i need a double carden prop (because of the radius arms and terrible vibration)

and rear relocation cones (they pop out all the time)

i am going to fit 35s as my next tyre

and so far as i can see now all i will have to do is extend the bumpstops by 2 inches

once youve fitted 35s with your spring lift then you will find the car will roll around like a ferry(this will probably be more scary with the power of your v8)

double shock mounts on the front will make the world of difference and take away a huge amount of roll

double shock the rear aswell (in progress on mine)and it will handle like a two ton mini 8)


but i tell you something

i can go someplaces now

and its all been worth it

forgot to add

if you put spacers under your extended springs

you will lose downward travel unless you extend your shocks or drop the shock mounts

and when i added the front radius arms my disco loks lobsided

the rear is lower than the front

new rear spring or spacers needed for me

Jake , good on ya.

It isnt that hard to fit 35's you dont need to lift it to the sky ive only got a 2 inch lift and it is ok. You do need to remove most of your arches - you have the devon ones and that should be fine. The transfer box will correct most of the gearing issue. If you have rock sliders you may need to cut them down. I have had to remove about 4 inches front and rear.
I also had to cut down my front bumper as the tyres rubbed that. You do need extended bump stops.
As Chugga says castor angle is well and truly screwed by that amount of lift combined with 35's. I fitted the safari gard 3 link as it is fully adjustable so i get no vibration from either propshaft-they are on their way out due to the travel im getting. Twin dampers arent needed , mine has way more roll than standard but as far as i can remember it never handled like a sports car so i have simply adjusted my driving to suit.
Now here for the real issue. What tyres were you planning to fit? If you want to go the whole hog and fit really aggressive tyres for serious offroading you need to uprate your diffs and halfshafts. 35's put a huge strain on the halfshaft so you need to look at fitting at least 24 spline if not uprated ashcroft/ maxidrive ones. The diffs are a major weak point i have heavy duty ring and pinion from ashcroft with arbs so they are very tough(touch wood). Several people i know have fitted 34 simexes and broke halfshafts very quickly.

One of the big disadvantages that Jake has compared to you Bulli is that he has a 5 dr...   makes major arch work at the back a bit more of a chore.  :(

5 door...rather you than me. The 3 door is easy, borrow a nibbler if you can it makes the job far quicker and neater.

i fitted 33's to my disco 5 door and quite frnakly any bigger and you're gonna enetr into serious problems, especially if you get super bendy suspension,
It's got a 4" lift witha massive amount of cutting so it doesn't foul the arches, but it still catches on full articulation on the rear inner wheel arch

my advice would be to use a 33 then get decent suspension and a set of lockers

I will try and get you the name of the breaker i got mine from he isnt too crazy( i think most of them are drug users!)
If you are going to do the diffs why not fit a cheeky set of arbs as Disco inferno suggested...they are the mutts nuts, NOTHING comes close.
Where on earth can you get mach 5's for 60 quid plus the dreaded??? I live 10 miles away from where they are made my friend who owns LRS cant get them for that...please tell me. I really want some. You need to get a boat load of offset to help clear the inner arch 4.5 inch at least

just a point if you're thinking of ARB's

a lot of people will recommend fittin gtoughened 1/2 shafts and CV's
In my experience i would keep the cash in my back pocket for other repairs or toys, i've done 6 challenege events this year and broken 3 shafts, total cost of repairs 30 quid, i keep a spare set in the car at all times, rears are minutes to change.
I was advised by lots of people to retain standard shafts and cv's as they are a nice cheap weak link in the train and will break b4 transfer boxes etc.

My parents live in Califonia and they are half price there.
Guess i'll have to speak to them about bringing me a pair when they come back next
