Jimny Advice Please!
« on: September 15, 2005, 22:34:28 »
Hello all!

I'm thinking of getting hold of a jimny for my daily drive and off road toy.

Just wondered if anyone wanted to share any advice on buying one, ie good models, things to avoid, useful mods etc. Basically anything cos I don't know a lot about them, but want one!

cheers all!

Simon

Hi Simon,  There are no real problem areas with the Jimny, early models 98-99  suffered gearbox probs  also clutches seemed to go quickly , just check the usual things  cambelt needs changing at around55,000 , the transfer-box mounts  tend to crack if the cars seen heavy off-road use  h/d steel ones are 75pounds a pair  soft/tops suffer stud failure seat base trim breaks off , mine has been megga reliable  thats as much as i can tell you , my W reg 2000 jlx  with 2inch lift / 215/80/15 machos  snorkel , recent cambelt change and major service 10mnths mot /tax is for sale @ 3,3oo  pm  me if intrested.

Must agree with Simon. Serious off roading brings the usual problems - regular bearing, seal, joint failure. Genuine Suzuki bits can be expensive and usualy need a 'special' tool. Cheaper alternative parts can be sourced and used with ingenuity and paitience. Most parts or alternatives can be found on SJ's or Vitara's.Also they are starting to turn in breakers so cheaper 2nd hand bits are becoming available.

To make a suprisingly good green laner all you realy need are some M/T tyres, 215/75-15 is an ideal size and maybe a 2" lift, although this will make on road performance a littlle more 'interesting' especially if you remove the anti-role bar. In which case I would suggest a steaaringf damper.
