Uneven Brake Pad Wear
« on: September 16, 2005, 00:01:17 »
Hi all, just a quick question, just went to check brake pads on the front and noticed that they seem to be wearing unevenly.  By this I mean the pads on the outer of the caliper (nearest the wheel) have about a 1/4 left where the pad on the inside (nearest the engine) has only about an 1/8 left.  As for the right side the outer had about 1/4 and the inner was pretty much on the metal!  I have changed all the front axle pads now, so will see if it does the same thing but I was just wondering if this is normal or if soemthing else is to blame such as the pistons sticking, though they did push back into the caliper very easily!

Are both splash sheids in place and running the same clearance?  dust can cause excessive pad wear.  Also any stickiness in the calliper or the anti rattle springs can leave one pad rubbing more than the other.  Have an assistant pump the pedal slowly and watch the pads move back and forth.
Hardness in the disks can make a difference too.

I get uneven wear on my hyrbid and put it down to poor pistons generally.  They need the pistons replacing as the outers hardly wear.

My disco they wear near perfect 50/50 but the hyrbid its more like 80/20!!!

One day I'll get round to that job.....

the splash shields are in place and kinda running the same distance, one is slightly closer to the disk than the other, and thats the side what was nearly to the metal.  The pistons seemed in perfect condition, and they wernt sticking or anything.  As they are from a 98 with only 57k i wouldnt have thought they would be giving up, but you never know!  I have a look at getting someone to pump the brake and see how they move. Either way the only reason i was asking was the other day I had the front right wheel lock up on me breifly causing the Landy to fly across on to the other side of the road! Thankfully it was late at night and not many people around, otherwise it could have been nasty... for the other car of course!  Thought it was something to do with the brakes, but Ive now found out ive got a mangled hub bearing!
