It's a very smart move by the marketing people at the supermarkets... they absorb the cost increase in the fuel, take a loss-leader to get people to their premises and get to look like complete heroes at the same time....

The smaller organisations won't be able to compete, so depending on how long they plan to buy market share there is a real possibility of putting a good chunk of them out of business at the same time.

That was happening well before the fuel problems and this will make it worse.  Did you know that there are 25% LESS forecourts than this time 5 years ago?  With cars going up in numbers it is a worry that the supermarkets may almost have a monoploy on it :(

Yep... this could well be the start of the 'price war' that silly chain letter was trying to start a while ago...  as I say, it depends on how determined they are to keep their share / gain share..   Morrisons were talking about anything up to 11p / litre reduction... so the gloves are well and truly off... like I say.. a smart marketing move because they get nothing but good press for it.

Could not agree more.  With costs as high as they are, even a whisper of a price slash gets them in the national papers and even has an effect on the supermarket share value.

We could be in for some interesting petrol prices!

Did you see in the news BP offered FREE petrol at one of its forecourts?  Only 74 cars got it (most a full tank mind you) and it gets in every national paper!  Talk about cheap advertising!  But how very effective!

I was a bit surprised to see our local main petrol stations as normal on Tuesday evening. Went into Norwich and Tescos was heaving. Even had people out directing the traffic!!

The funny one was the queue of 4 cars at the one pump in the village station........ total gridlock   Can't remember seeing more than one at a time before!

Haven't used the 110 all week and the Freebie had most of a tank from last weekend anyway. That will need filling tonight.

Living in a rural area I always make sure that I *never* go below 1/4 of a tank. This is for peace of mind in case I have to do the 30+ one way  miles to hospital if anything happened to a member of the family (on some nights there is only *one* ambulance to cover an area of roughly 70 square miles). To be honest I start to get uneasy once I get below 1/2 a tank.

I hope morrisons do drop it by that much as there are 2 i could vivit on the way to work. I filled mine to the brim! My bike that is which delivers about 65 to the gallon even when im hammering it(drz400) So i chose not to queue, 1 garage had unleaded at 92.9 but the wait would have been ages the opposite was 95.9 with no queue...not much of a contest cost me about 10 pence more to fill up. I will have to buy a non brand packet of crisps to make up for it!
Lets hope there is a real price war....remember the lower the price we pay the less that prat Brown gets!

I filled the SJ up as it was low and I was in town anyway. Cost me £26. Forecourt was full and 3 pumps out of 5 locked. Had a 10 minute wait. What got me was the people topping up their tanks. £5, £10 and one woman in an old style mini, (a real mini), £3.50.
