R380 crossmember Galvanised?
« on: September 25, 2005, 09:35:00 »
I am building a 110 from the floor up and am now getting the chassis in some state ready for getting galvanised.  I am looking at putting a 300TDi with an R380 gearbox.  This obviously needs an appropriate cross member.  Should I have this bolted on when the chassis gats galved or should it be treated separately and then bolted on?

I wish this project would just hurry up and finish!

But I don't think it will if I keep making simple mistakes

I would tend to bolt it on after the chassis and crossmember are galvanised so you can get the bolts undone again if you need to.
The galvanising may fuse the nuts to the bolts otherwise and you get a complete coating on the chassis by leaving it seperate.

100% seperate, as any mating surfaces will not take the zinc, but will hold the acid from the dipping, then all you get is nasty rusty stains forever, and then rust.
If you weld two pieces of steel together, it is always better to fully weld them, as the acid will find every nook and cranny to weep from after dipping.

Trust me, i do a lot of it.
