Abingdon 4x4 - money raised
« on: September 26, 2005, 18:06:32 »
A big thanks to all who supported this ever growing event.  It was the first time I have been actively involved in the organisation and although I only managed the marshals the work Gary, Nick, Darren, Paul and goerge to name only a few is incredible.

After packing up Sunday we got a rough count of making just over £7000 for charity which makes all the hard work well worthwhile.

I hope to be lead marshal next year and Im hoping to get a load of Mud-clubbers envloved if your interested.  Only be marshaling half a day but I can guarantee you'll enjoy it.

Many thanks again, your support was really appreciated and apologies from me for not getting to meet more of you but I never expected the work entailed!!!

Still, a grand weekend had by all I'd say!   :D  :D  :D  :D

Well done to all...  every time I saw you Ash you seemed to be going somewhere... I trust you got a good night's sleep on Sunday ;-)

James and Gary were looking a bit frazzled but still cheery on Sunday night.. as you say, it makes it all worthwhile when you count up the pennies at the end.

Sleeped like a baby (bottle of wine and a Thai probably helped!  Let Gary and Co. at Abingdon and they were just hitting the beers at around 6pm.  It looked that by the rate the Guinness was going they were going to have one hell of an evening ahead!!!!!  :P  :P  :P

I'm glad those that went enjoyed it. It was bloomin' hard work as usual but I was really pleased with the course this year, despite having to accommodate a runway emergency area right in the middle!

A huge thanks to Ash for co-ordinating the marshalls. I know only too well that it's a task akin to herding cats, especially on Sunday afternoon when everybody wants to pack up

To all you guys who've volunteered to help out next year, I'm sure Ash has already got your names on a list

A few personal highlights:

Most interesting vehicle: a Ferret Scout car - a pig to drive but incredible to watch.

Funniest moment: when the driver of a BMW X5 decided that discretion was the better part of valour after having to be pulled backwards off the same (small) hill twice

Most worrying moment (1): when I received a call about a Suzuki that had apparently turned over. Turned out it was just leaning against a bank and was righted by a marshall standing on one of the wheels (phew!).

Most worrying moment (2): when it started to hammer down with rain on Sunday afternoon. Course organisation becomes barely managed chaos when it rains as the recovery teams struggle to keep up with the influx of calls and temporary bypasses are hastily introduced when previously inocuous hills become suddenly impossible. Ho hum :)

Secret smile moment: the two Series I Land Rovers and the Willys Jeep that went everywhere that the 'big tyre brigade' did, but usually without any of the drama

Sounds like a great time was had by All!  Unfortunately, I was unable to make it.

Must do so one time, so why not make it next year?  I only live 90 minutes away, so could help out with the Marshalling if required ...

Congratulations on the vast amount raised. :o

Hi Tim,

'sawlright, no problem :)

IN four years I haven't yet managed to get off the course to see any of the stands or displays and evenings are usually spent slumped in a chair

Darren!!  Is that you as in Darren from Clerk of the course???

If so, just wanted to say a big thanks mate.  Got a couple of emails saying that the professionalism of yourself and Nick was a good enough reason alone to go back and help.  You did an amazing job and the guys from Aylesbury commented on your approachability, kind manner and hoped you would be running the c of c next year

The only comment were that they wished some of the recovery guys could treat the marshals like adults like you and Nick did.  They could learn alot from you two on managing a course, working as a team etc.

Many thanks again Darren, everyone had a fantastic weekend so hopefully if Gary is happy (only lost one of his flags   ) we'll be back next year for more!   :D  :D  :D  :D  :D

I'm all red now

Loved every minute mate even if it felt like I was going to have a near heart attack when when the rain came and we only had min marshalls!  They coped well, very impressed with them all!  Recovery guys must have thought Christmas had come early when the rain came!  Never saw them smile as much all weekend :D

I'll have to agree with that observation.  Didn't spoil the weekend at all though  :D

This was my 3rd year of full two day marshalling and it just gets better.  Joining in the all round good guys theme I felt that the organisation and running of the off-road course was probably the best yet - Darren, Ash and Nick - well done.

The rain was great - didn't half liven things up - especially as I was having a drive round in the Disco at the time and SWMBO got soaked looking after my little bit of the course

It's already in the diary for next year
