No Drive except in difflock!
« on: September 27, 2005, 20:19:52 »
:?:  Hi i am not sure what i have broke!.... my disco will not drive in gear unless i actuate the difflock, i can turn the front prop whilst it is in gear and standing still but not the rear so at least i have narrowed it down to that!..i have dropped out the diff and cant see any damage and the diff side of the driveshafts seem intact....any ideas and what is the best way to check these items for wear/breakage?... :?

it might be your cv joints its worth a check, when out of difflock and in gear can you hear any grinding coming from any of the front corners :?:

I take it that it's the FRONT diff you removed for checking?

Check the halfshafts and the splines within the diff for damage - one vehicle had no apparent damage to a rear diff a couple of months ago, but the splines had worn too much for the drive to be positive ...

The other possibility is a blown CV joint - check that the half shafts (now that you've removed the diff, this is easy) are solidly attached to the hub drive members.

i would guess at cv joints gone if you lost drive like that but its not unknown for the splines in the diff to wear out

As others have said, it'll be the diff, a half shaft, or a CV joint.
