Transfer box swap?
« on: September 28, 2005, 20:32:08 »
I'm going to swap all the bits from my V8 onto my Tdi inc the 235/85r16 MTR's.
On the V8 it loses power going up long road hills in 5th with these big tyres on.
Now, i have a 1.410 ratio transfer box. Should i fit it or will it the Tdi be man enough to take it?
biggest problem is the Tdi struggles up long road hills with the caravan on the back.
Any thoughts
I'm going to work on the engine power bit asap.
main thing, do i swap the transfer boxes or not?
 :D

Power plans.
1. Get rid of cat converter
2. Fit Safari snorkel
3. Fit K&N filter
4. Remove egr completly
5. Talk to Alisports about an upgrade intercooler

Fingers crossed it should be ok after that lot!

The transfer boxes I thought were the same??

I put my V8 transfer box onto my Tdi but have not tried it on road yet.

Jake, whay not fit a biger intercooler?  The ali sport is supposed to make a huge difference to towing.  I'm going to fit one on my my disco as soon as money allows
Ashley (but everyone knows me as Ash...)

YES!
If you think it's bad on the V8 then wait till the TDi sees the tyres!!

I've got a large intercooler, uprated injector pump, EGR & cat have gone, K&N airfilter & Safari Snorkel fitted and 33" tyres, with the 1.22 T-box it still turned it's nose up when it saw a hill from 2 miles away.
The 1.410 T-box brought it back to normal and I could pull away in second, accelorate up hill and do 30 in 4th & 40 in 5th. Sure, the revs are up a bit and the consumption is a bit heavier than before but it's so much better to drive.

Okay so this is new to me, I was always under the impression the boxes had the same ratio but then again Ive run V8's forever!!

Now Ive got a Tdi I do have the option to change as I've LOADS of V8 transfer boxes kicking around.

Im running a 300tdi auto so are the transfer boxes on that different?  Will the V8 transfer box off the auto make it better?

I have to say towing the hybrid is SLOW!!!!  :x  :x

The normal Disco & Rangie transfer box is a 1.22:1 ratio box. The one I fitted was from a TD5 Defender which is a 1.41:1 ratio and the earlier 90/110s used 1.6:1 transfer boxes.

The 1.22 t-box was okay with the 31" tyres but then I fitted the 33" tyres and Boy did I notice the difference!

The other option to changing the T-box is to change the Ring & Pinion in both diffs to the 4.11 from the standard 3.54 ratio. See Ashcrofts site for details.
