window tinting and the law

with regards to the front side windows being tinted

the law states that 75% light has to penetrate the front side windows

many vehicles windows are already tinted in the factory

this factory tinting is the maximum allowed by law

i got stopped today by the ministry and police

he put a light meter on my front glass,,,which was tinted a lot lighter than the rear (light smoke i believe)

and it registered 33.5%

the policeman told me it was illegal and that i must remove it immediatly or my vehicle would be impounded!!!

the moral of the story

if the glass is already tinted

that is the maximum allowed by law

they also informed me that the landrover is the most stolen vehicle in the uk

Hi mike,

i think i while i mentioned this as it had happened to me with my clio,it had limo black on the rear side windows & dark smoke on the front door windows,
as you say the law states that 75% of the light MUST pass through BUT at the mo the polis & government cant make there mind up so most police forces are going for a no tolerance initiative, as you also say i guess you got a prohibition order saying the vehicle cannot be moved unless al 4 wheels eare clear of the ground ie on a trailer or transported,i got one & its now framed on my bedroom wall along with the un prohibition order  8)

at the time i knew my tints were illegal so decided to go along & basically not cause any hassle so for doing this i got of with a £30 fine instead of the £60 & 3 points they can give,

oh i almost forgot to say,my tints were 19.3% on the front doors & if they had been any darker IE 15% (i presume the talked you through the limits in the comfort of the jammer) i could have been done for driving without due care & attention & also for driving an unroadworthy vehicle

Not wanting to preach but did they say anything about the extra wide wheels & the fact they stick out abit??
