North East Search And Rescue Volunteers Required!
« on: October 12, 2005, 22:11:19 »
Hi Everyone,

The members of the North East Section Discovery Owners club, in conjunction with the North East Ambulance Service are setting up a search and rescue and medical emergency assistance group using 4x4 vehicles which will go live on 1st December 2005. This will be a 365 day a year 24 hours a day service.

This group is to assist with off road rescues and emergency situations whereby ordinary road ambulances cannot for whatever reason gain access. It could be because of snow, flood, landslide etc. It could also be because conventional vehicles cannot traverse the terrain to get to the site of an incident, say beside a river, up a hill etc.

We urgently need people in the North East of England, from Yorkshire to the Scottish Borders and from Carlisle to the East Coast who own a road legal 4x4 that can spare some of their time to this worthy cause. To become a member please in the first instance contact me via email on dogunit@nefi.co.uk

We have a meeting of this group in Durham on Wednesday 19th October 2005 at 8pm. If you are interested and can spare some of your time email me with your name and contact telephone number and I will give you details of how to join this worthwhile group. Help us put something back into our community and stop the anti's in their tracks.

I thank you all in advance for your time.

Chris

We would be covering as far north as the Scottish Borders. Possibly beyond if the need arose but we are controlled by the North East Ambulance Service.

Reaper,

You have a similair thing in Bucks and Oxon already.

Take a look at this - http://www.borg-4x4.org/

They work mostly for the council emergency planning department but they are available for the same as we are doing here.

We are just taking it one step further in that we will get driver training, first aid training and extra off road training to assist the paramedics to get to the casualty.

Does this go on everywhere? Is there a central "list" of areas that do it?

No there are only three areas that I know of that do this work. Here in the North East, Bucks and Oxon and Cambridgeshire.

I do know that if this is successful here in the North East it may be rolled out Nationally within the Discovery Owners Club but that has yet to be voted on with the committee.

Heres hoping as we feel there is merit in what we are doing and it certainly helps our case when it comes to the anti 4x4 crowd. Maybe they will stop and think this Winter when one of their relatives or someone they know is rescued by one of OUR 4x4's.

We still need a lot more people in the North East. Please people help us help our communities.

We were thinking about a similar thing up here on the island.

During the storms we had in January this year none of the road ambulances could go out due to the highsided nature of the vehicles and wind speeds of upto 100 mph.
We only have one 4x4 Coastguard vehicle & 1 4x4 Police vehicle here in Stornoway (there are others around the islands) and they were assisting with road closures, transporting oxygen & baby milk around and rescueing people.
You may have seen two of Coastguards on the BBC's 'Coast' programme when the visited here. ;)

The only problem is that we don't have any type of 4x4 club up here.
I guess that's a que to start one then. #-o

Budgie, if you have a discovery and you do by the looks of your avitar, then you are able to join the Discovery owners club and have all the benefits that go with it. I am an islander myself, originally from the Shetland Islands so know about isles life.

Why don't you join the DOC and set up your own section in the isles?

Dirtie Gertie, I don't have access to the LRO forums so yes please I would like to have it advertised in as many places as possible. Just email me the link, so I can see who is replying to it though and include my email address. Would appreciate your help.

You'd be suprised!  :D
There's 3 Disco's, one Rangie, a Terrano, 2 Troopers, a TD5 90 & a Series IIa just at the Coastguard station, and that's not including the company vehicles!! :)

Most of the 4x4's on the islands are L200's, Disco's & Troopers so any club we start would have to be open to all, otherwise you just wouldn't get enough people involved.

"This is a local club for local people. We don't what the likes of yous round ere." :(biglaugh):

Chris, I had thought about DOC but I like to be able to take part in club events on a regular basis, bit hard to do out here, as you know!
That's why I joined the Mud Club, easy to stay up-to-date with goings on!!  :D

There are quite a few groups doing the same sort of thing around the country. The group I'm with has just expanded to cover Devon. We have around 40 members for Somerset, and are looking to do the same for Devon.

Were open to all makes as well, even Jeeps

Yeah, sorry chaps, some idiot started posting really irrelevant and quite nasty rubbish on the thread, asking about professional qualifications, who is deemed to say who is competent  to be a rescuer etc, in spite of me copying and pasting Chris's original post and saying that I was posting it on his behalf, and any questions should be e-mailed direct to him. Just a prat who likes the sound of his own voice IMO. Hey ho, there's always (at least) one.....
