Discovery Spot Light bar
« on: February 29, 2004, 09:26:03 »
Does anyone know of a company that makes a roof mount bar to hold 4 spotlamps?
I have 4 lamps on my roof rack, but can't get into local car parks if I leave it on, I pranged my wing on a night run last year and fancy getting my extra lights back. I could probably knock something up, but thought I'd see how much a ready built one is if anyone makes one.
I'd ideally like it to mount right at the front of the roof so the spots sit just above the windscreen, where the roof curves back. One of those pods like CT/G4 freelanders had would be kinda cool but would probably stop me getting the roof rack back on if I needed it.
ideas folks
thanks
John

John, have you considered buying a single 'ladder rack' type bar and just bolting your lights to it? You could even buy a fancy Thule one with the quick release brackets so it'd be easy to remove.

I did that a few years back, for a 1 off event, as my roof rack is lucky to come out to play once a year I was looking for something smart and fairly permanent, but that does not make the car any higher as there are plenty of height bars around here. I hoped they would sit where the roof curves over above the top of the windscreen as it seems a fairly wasted space for much else. I also hoped it would pendant mount the lamps meaning any tree strikes etc would be deflected by the bar and not some nice expensive lamps. I found this picture on the Devon 4x4 site, which looks to me like an expedition cage, but they say they are working on something along those lines, and it should give you an idea.
thanks
John

Like I said, I don't know anything about it other than they pointed me at that picture when I rang them, I figured it was an "expedition cage" as there are bars running down the sides of the roof. They are supposed to ring me back about it, and a winch bumper, but haven't yet.
will give then another ring in the week.
Thanks

Following on from another thread try here:

You could always just buy one for mounting spots.

I am in "negotiations" with the guy who makes them on ebay, I may have to have a closer look at the firstfour offroad blokes, I was trying not to increase the overall hieght of the car so I can still get into local car parks. he was helpful when I mailed him aboout bumpers, he said the winch I have is too heavy and it wouldn't fit!
will chase these up when I get back from Cambodia in a couple of weeks, I'm going to see if I can find where Lara Croft left her 110 in the first film ;-)

John,
Does this bar still need an internal cage please?
If it's standalone (sic) I would also be interested.

Tony
