When dipped headlights are on, the nearside works fine however the offside bulb lights up but is really dull, maybe a quater of the brightness then when you put full beam on it goes out completly. Any ideas to what it could be, dodgy connection or a bad earth?

Probably a bad connection, probably earth.

I had a little 'smokey' session recently when the earth tag on the underside of the slam panel snapped off  Things got very hot very quickly!

try removing both sets of lamps and swapping them over
its about 5 screws for each lamp.

Got the main beam to work now, however when when i go to full beam the nearside works fine but the offside goes out completly.
