Gee whiz the level of ignorance and intollerance displayed there worries me about the generation of kids they are bringing up.

There were some fair ponts raised by a few of the participants but some of the others are stunning in their attitude. I must lead a very sheltered  life as I didn't realise real people really expressed such opinions.

oh dear here we go again
well if they dont like my 4x4 guess I'll just have to sell it and get a ford escort and mod it up with spoilers body kit etc and drive up and down in front of there houses all day and night at 120 mph because obviously by these anti-4x4 bigots point of view we would apear to be the cause of all the world problems etc

ive given up trying to offer discussion points in 'debates' like that.  those that dont wont to listen or understand wont. i accept that in a collision 4x4's are not the most person friendly, but you have to collide first!! there are some good points out there both pro and anti but rarely a well reasoned debate. it just tends to wind me up now. just as long as they dont stop my choice of vechicle and past time i dont really care any more

The worst thing is I get it.
All these a**holes that buy these 4x4's and dont need/use them properly are spoiling it for the rest of us.
I believe that all the old Volvo drivers are driving 4x4's now.
All the road rage i see every day is because of arrogant idiotic 4x4 drivers.
You know the types, VW Toureg, Merc M class, BMW X5 and (sorry Neil, not you) Range Rover drivers.
Cutting across lanes, dodgy parking, dropping the kids at school and so on.
The only benifit these d**kheads have is helping used car prices for the likes of us!.
I agree, in principal, that the anti 4x4 aguement is right. Send these fools back to the 5 series, S class types of cars.
Leave the rest of us alone, we're using these motors for the way they were intended.
If that was to happen then, once again, we'd be left along again to enjoy our motors in peace.
The only problem i see with getting rid of waster 4x4 drivers is the 2nd hand prices would rise again.
Look at how cheap you can get a older Disco/Rangie for now

No no, dont get me wrong
I mean the people that buy the latest 4x4 because its the 'in thing'.
I dont disagree with anyones choice in what they buy but some of these people are giving us a bad name.
i.e the ex Volvo drivers that now own 4x4's
(left indicator, turning right   )
The problem is they are giving us a bad name.
I spend all day on the road (truck driver) and i see all sorts of bad driving.
The brand new 4x4 drivers are the worst i've seen since the demise of the Volvo driver.
That's all.

That's nothing to do with 4x4s though... and labelling them as 'a-h' does nothing to help either.

Bad driving standards are one thing, and need to be addressed... but there are bad driving standards in all types of vehicle ownership.  The fact that they own 4x4s shouldn't make a jot of difference, and saying that they should just go back to owning BMWs, etc. only adds fuel to the anti-4x4 argument.

You cannot make any argument that says "Because someone doesn't need x, they shouldn't own it."

Does anyone need a car that will do 120mph ?   Does anyone need sports suspension ?  Does anyone need a car with a 3 litre engine ?   You can play those games all night long, but ultimately we have the right to choose what we drive and *that* is what we should be fighting for.

How do you feel about being told that you can't have modified suspension, or that your engine must be left untouched ?     That's the next logical step, and is a reality in many countries already.

Like Jake I 'm also a truck driver and have seen the decline in ALL driving standards over the past 20 yrs maybe the answer could lie in a multi layer test like  motor bikes and hgv's but when you get "the model" in her 4x4 double parking at the school gates in clear No Parking zones or disabled parking area's in large cities and/or towns it is bound to cause uproar eventually and those that use them for work and liesure responsably will end up paying

It's easier to police things like that, with Traffic Wardens. As much as I hate them when I'm working in town centres, they are the answer to parking problems like those.

Fond memories :) . Bad drivers will always chose a car that that makes them feel safe. It allows them to drive like everyone else (or how they think every one drives). Its called "risk compensation". The safer you feel the more risks you take. T. E. Lawrence (of arabia fame) suggested a 2 inch spike on the steering wheel to encourage safer driving.

What the moaning minis dont understand is that if you ban 4x4s in town then the current crop will simply move onto something else that they think is safe and will continue to drive like idiots.

Steped licensies are one way forward. Limit engine size until the person passes another test. Another way forward would be more police and more prosecutions.

<off topic>

My pet hate at the moment are the people who are benifit/low income and pay back fines at £5 a week. There are a couple of people I know who owe thousands of pounds in fines. They still drive, no MOT no insurance etc. Its cheaper for them to pay the £5 a week than it is for them to be legal.

I agree that it is personal freedom of choice that is the issue here, whatever the individual wants to drive/ride.  As for driving standards, that is a separate issue surely. Am I the only one who`s been scared s**tless by trucks, whose drivers equate might with right, there`s good and bad all round surely.
