rev counter gone awol

just noticed tonight while out, the rev counter is readign all over the place, nothing at tickover then 500 when it should be about 1500 - 2000, then if it feels like it reads ok when im doing about 3000, otherwise iits bouncing all over the place,

any ideas oh wise ones

It tends to be the alternator that's playing up.

dont see how, unless the alternators about to give up, is this land rovers idea of an early warning devise???

Mine does the same thing on occasions - it's doing it at the moment, in fact!

Have a check at the back of the alternator and check the wiring is secure. I found that an earth wire had come loose (but not broken) and once I fixed it the rev counter worked again!

The easiest way to fix it is to chop off the connector on the small wire at the back of the alternator and replace it with a new one, this will make it more secure and the problem should be solved.

Agree with Frank, don't bother trying to clean and tighten the spade connector on the white/black wire, put a new connector on there.
I had the same problem when I first got the Disco, changed the connector and it's been fine for the last four years!!  

If  a new connector doesn't sort the problem then it's more likely to be in the alternator internals that are on the way out.  :(

The forum has an automatic filter to pick up on swear words and filter them out (or amend them or something), maybe one should be setup to auto reply to any electrical question with: Check your connections, especially to earth.

Also if you have to pop off the alternator and clean the spade connection on the unit itself, used to get a dim genny light, beat the hell out of me until i did this and it went away :?

well ive cut the small connector off and soldered the wire straight onto the alternator, seems to work ok now :lol:

please dont critsize the forum as per typical response, because without everyone saying teh small connector on the back of the alternator, iwould have fixed it first time
