Wading Plugs

Anybody tell me what wading plugs should be on TD5 defender??

I have the snorkel properly waterproofed etc. The stock axle breather terminate at the back of the engine, which I reckon is probably pretty good as far as they go.

But I was trying to figure out what Wading Plugs should be used, but I can't see any holes that would need any cos off all that plastic underneath. Which I figure means that it's either well hidden or no existent. (Or I'm blind)

i thought i had heard from someone that you dont need them in a td5. but i dont actually know what they are or do :oops:  it was just a conversation overheard and i happen to ask if i needed them.

Well my investigations would suggest that to be true.

there is one plug in the bellhousing but AFAIK it comes fitted as standard,

probably for those with mono block drives  :lol:

As far as I could find out from a Land Rover dealer, the wading plugs are for the Timing Cover.
The front axle breather terminates in the back of the engine bay, the rear axle breather terminates in one of the rear wheel archs.

This is for a TD5 90,

I thought that on the 110 the rear axle terminated behind the engine aswell, I definetly have more than one pipe, but I suppose it could be for something else.

Do you have the one for the timing cover?? Easy enough to fit etc??

Mind you if you use the same LR Dealer I do, they propbably don't know what a wading plug is. They've stopped parking my 110 round the front now when they have it cos, it gets more interest than the RRs and Discos they're trying to sell  :D

the rear axle breather stops just above the chassis level at the rear,the other breather coming up behind the engine are -front axle,tbox & g box

Sounds like it might be worth extending atleast the rear chassis one, if not the others. What the general opinion??

rear one is certainly worth raising i would of thought, especially if your going to be climbing out of water and dunking the back end.

I use Hammonds in Suffolk, the wading plugs can be fitted via the bonnet so no crawling in the mud. Unless like me you drop them through the engine bay, Doh! :roll:
 The plugs are only for the timing case, as the rest are raised to the height of the axle breathers.

Oh and they keep putting mine out front when it's a bit mucky, been told they do it to prove you can use them off road!

at the front of the bell housing there appears to be plugs similar to the diff plugs but smaller hole than them( less than 1/2 drive) are these wading plugs there is definatley some thread on one of them and I appear to have a dribble of water where the gasket meets the engine

Yes it is, simply get a 5m length of 6mm OD tubing, pull existing breather. Push in new tubing and re-run  to front. I changed diff oil as a precaution.

My 04 90 wasnt supplied with any wading plugs so if it need them anywhere, and i dont have them and any damage is done LR will have a happy job of replacing the damaged bits free!!

bottom 2 are wading plugs been advised to take the bottom one out just got the clutch sorted and they drained 21/2 litres of water out :(  of the bell housing
