Starter Motor Heat Shield

I had a big problem yesterday on Chester services; basically the starter needed a tap to engage but I managed ot destroy the heat shield getting at it to tap it.
Has anybody ran the 200tdi for any length of time with this heat shield missing? How critical is it?
Generally I beleive that if the manafacturers think it is I'll refit it but is it more for hotter climates?

If the vehicle is working hard, then yes, it is a useful thing.
Not too difficult to overheat the solenoid and / or damage the motor windings with too much heat.

I also find the cable get very hard and brittle after a while, I've replace the starter lead twice on the V8.

Not every problem can be solved with duct tape, and it's exactly for those situations we have WD 40

They do on "average"... but the exhaust of a Turbo engine can get *very* hot if it is working hard

OK Guys, I think you have pretty much confirmed my thoughts; I will get one to put back but at least I don't have to panic about it.
Thanks
