As I see it you have only 2 options:

1) go for it and take the clocks out first (they aren't too hard) and fit the new bulbs properly.

2) fit a light that will shine on them, this will also look 'silly', you will get glare from the rest of the plastic on the dash, it will never be as good, and you will probably attract even more attention from the police (for having lights on in the cab).

I think you are going to have to bite the bullet

Join? Only kidding. :D

Which model are we talking about? You see replacement packs on eBay for both 200 and 300 quite often. To be honest I don't think the binnacle replacement is as hard as say the heater controls. Its just two screws really.

If it's the 200 tdi it's really not that difficult, I had to do it and it was all just common sense really. All you have to do is tip the binnacle forward, you don't need to take it right off.

This isnt as silly as it sounds.  I had a Rover Montego a long time ago and it had the identical instrument panel.  There were also 2 bulbs under a cover in the top of the instrument panel that shone down.  I havent taken my panel apart but I reckon its proberbly the same or at least the holes for the bulbs might be there.

I fitted a set of blue leds from ebay.  Work very nicely.

Got them from this bloke.
