I have just been given an Astra Belmont 1600 which by my reconing will not pass another MOT, but motor runs good with fairly low miles,
So, looking at my SJ this morning and thinking, SJ416.
Can anyone out there tell me if anyone does a conversion plate to match Astra engine to SJ gearbox.....Has anybody done it before,do splines match/starter motor line up etc.etc..................................................

Why bother, break the belmont, sell all the bits, and buy a 2.0 petrol or a Vauxhall tdi engine and a carlton gearbox. Even better
Go on....cut me in half........it says SUZUKI all the way thru the middle!!

Would my halfshafts be man enough for 2.0ltr ????
Would that be an Astra turbo diesel lump ????
Carlton g/box would be nice [ 5 speed ].
What about electrics on modern diesels, do I need to play with my loom??
You have got me thinking now, If I move the engine backwards on chassis towards middle and move t/box back as well, shorten rear prop/lengthen front prop, as the diesel lump is heavier than a petrol move all the weight to the centre, hmmmmm, rear mounted rad.
I am deciding how to build a new body on it any way [ no body on it at the moment] so all the work could be done easy enough with nothing getting in the way........................
Thanks for that..

Not gunna sleep tonight now.. Right where is that tape measure

Post this on www.difflock.com
go to the technical section, loads of people done this before, some have pics on how its done, 1.5 Diesel Izuzu out of a Vauxhall is most popular
Remember it will come in handy even if you never use it

Its a 410 and looking on Difflock [ thanks for that link ] there was a link to another site where someone is mating a Ford siera gearbox to a Ford diesel engine and making a lot of work for themselves I think.
Going to have a look on eblag in a minute to see if I can see any Siera turbo diesels [ I used to drive one as a Taxi driver so know there good motors ] failing that there is a few scrappies around this area.
Thanks

Easy enough to get the vauxhall motor in, centre propshaft is worth gettin done properly. Dont use the Vaux 1.5 TD, as its the same size etc as the 1.7(may as well go for the bigger lump)
Its a lot heavier, lots and lots heavier, you will need to uprate the front springs.

DONT move everything back, your rear prop is too short already, dont make it any worse.

The hardest bit is gettin the extra cooling(much bigger radiator needed), intercooler, and all that stuff in the engine bay. The electrics are easy, only an ign live for the diesel pump, and a starter live for the starter.

You can pick them up for a hundred quid or so, gearboxes for 30 ish. Buy the bits, take a look, and if you dont fancy it, sell em again.

PS, the clutch is a mix up of carlton 1.8, and astra diesel bits.

Tanks Rolla
Just had a look at the SJ this morning and had the same thought, the rear prop is short enough and any shorter will reduce articulation and probably destroy the UJ's.
As for the extra weight, well the front springs are straight now, almost parrallel with the floor so will need replacing, I will have to replace all the shocks any way as they were different sizes to start with, and I have been told ES 1000 are the ones to go for as they are softer, but with all that extra weight on the front I might put ES 3000's on front, ES 1000,s on rear [ not much weight on rear ]

If your still running 410 axles first upgrade i think of would be to goto 413 axles at the very least, toyota axles wud be better.
The extra weight and power of a bigger engine will kill the axles pretty quickly.

I ran a cavalier sri 130 engine on standard sammy axles, and after 12 months of use, the only good part left in the drive train was the t-case, every shaft got twisted by the extra power, 1 front diff and many cv joints let go.

Something to think about before you throw a big engine in the sj.
