90 Starter Recon
« on: November 16, 2005, 21:20:03 »
the starter motor on my 2.5TD 90 has packed up, tries to start on occasion, but generally had it. when it does try, it is turning over really slowly. i have had the battery checked and OK, and thinking it may be the solenoid had it.

Local electrical specialist estimated £50 to recon, and agreed with the "possibility" that it "may" be the solenoid, but once they had the motor, wanted £170 just to take starter motor off  :x

can anybody let me know if this is an easy enough job to change (bad enough job getting the poxy starter off), as it would obviously be a lot cheaper than getting a new starter. i may even have a go at doing the brushes whilst at it.

any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

Hi just to help you out  I hope I recently had a run of starter problems with my 200tdi 90 it still had the origional starter from the n/a diesel from 1985 fitted and I went wading and drowned it, so fitted new one from britparts it lasted about 3weeks and started playing up so took it off and they swopped it for another it lasted 2weeks and same problem by this time I had stripped my old starter and just cleaned and lubed everything and bingo it started working again so remover 2nd faulty new starter and fitted old one, i took 2nd faulty one back and got another for spare. Old starter lasted 3months then gave up altogether well its 20yrs old so had to fit new spare one one and guess what it f****d up as well after only a week exactly the same symptoms of the other two. So feeling a little fed up decided I needed a quality starter motor as everything else had been checked or swopped I part exchanged the brit part starter for a Valeo one was about and extra 30 quid and bingo no more problems seems to me the brit part starters are rubbish Moral of this post is you get what you pay for sometimes.
Gaz ..........

turned out that the cost to recon was going to be almost as much as buying new, so i brought a new on from Paddock Spares.....

Just Hope it lasts longer than gt.jacko's  :?
