Wanted. A Test-Drive In a Td5
« on: November 19, 2005, 11:30:46 »
Does anyone have access to one not too far from the Wakefield/Leeds area?
With regard to the thread of mine entitled; 'Which Do I Buy?'

'Drum' has kindly offered to let me try his 110, but as has been pointed out, it's rather modified & will give me a misleading impression.

The main-dealer in Wakefield (Guy Salmon) hasn't even got one on the forecourt, there's a 110 Double-Cab in the showroom, but somehow I don't think they'd get it out for me.

Haven't tried Rocar-Moores (Hudderfield), Ripon Land Rover, Armstrong-Massey (York), Copley Motors (Halifax) yet, as I really want to drive it without a salesman alongside.

'Silkstone 4x4' (Penistone) & 'Simmonites' (Bradford) may be visited next week on my days off

Dave's is chipped, so although probably closer than mine it's not
"off the shelf", I know that Farnells at Gusieley have 90 Defender they use as a courtesy vehicle and they let me borrow that for half a day when I was look at buying mine. And I always insist on getting that and not a freelander when mine goes in  :D

Driving mine with 35" Tyres is probably close to driving a standard with a Caravan in terms of power.

Didn't know that

I thought they'd left Guisley?
So where are they now then?, they used to be roughly here (they shared premises with a Rice horse-box dealer)
I know where their Frizinghall premises are (off Canal Road) in Bradford

Well, we'll be doing that at some point

That's the place though I don't know the Horse-Box dealer. I'll be honest I don't rate they're servicing but then maybe that's main dealers for you. But they did arrange a test drive in a TD5 90 when I was looking around, which is more than Guy Salmon at Leeds could manage.

Neither can Guy Salmon Wakefield. I reckon Armstrong-Massey on the A64 (near Companthorpe) is my best bet

The Rice (horse-box)dealer shared the site at the time, last time I went past it was a Rover dealer

Wasn't that a branch of Farnells that used to be in Settle (in the car-park by the railway viaduct), but I'm going back perhaps 15-20years (or more)

I'm thinking of trying them for my Warranty Work, and servicing while still under warranty, so let me know your impressions of them if you do go.

Got onto the forecourt, turned round & parked up. I'd walked roughly 20yards before 'the suit' came out.
A pleasant "Good afternoon" was offered, & duely returned.

"Are you looking for anything in particular Sir?"
"Do you have any 110Countys in stock?"
"Double-Cab, Hard-Top or Pick-Up?"
No, I'm looking for a Station Wagon in Coniston Green"
"Sorry sir, we haven't" (consulting a piece of paper from his pocket)
"Okay, thankyou anyway"

No offer to come inside & see the new stock in the showroom, or see what could be found on the PC at other dealers.
At least Guy Salmon (Wakefield) showed me the group stock on the PC & told me about there was special deals on new LR's in December

Ah I remember them now, when I went I hadn't decided on either defender, or discovery. He decided for me that I wanted a discovery (this was at the time they we're just starting to phase them out), I asked about the discount cos they we're now obsolete, none cos they're in high demand!!

Might be worth test driving a Van or Crewcab, just remember the vans are abit more rattly. If you test drive a 90, they are a bit more nippy, but not much.

Give Farnells at Guisley a try. I rang them first and arranged a test drive with Caroline, (Only reason I remember was her badge was on upside down, and I think she though I was staring at her breasts rather than trying to read it, honest  :D ), just don't take it back to be serviced there.
