V8's have a timing chain
also check for regular ooil changes as if it hasnt been changed regularly can cause problems on the V8s with worn cams

Don't now much about the engine side of it but look for rot. Inner wings, sills, rear boot floor, rear cross member, all brackets on the axels ie were the springs fit and round the diff pan. and round the front lights.
All can be fixed but at a cost

Also just feel for any slack in the drive train, check the steering box is not leaking.

As Mike says , fairly high mileage that though(for the year) Most 200/300 tdi have lunar milage but a lot of v8's are much less....due to the cost of running them.
Oil changes are vital-older oil often gets burnt onto the valley and causes contamination which lead to problems with the cam and followers.
Have a look at the boot floor as they rust like mad. check the inner wings aswell. Chassis should be sound at that age.
good luck

WELL THANKS GUYS.

BOUGHT THE DISCO TODAY     LOOKS OK :?  allthough i am no expert. gear box seamed a bit lazy but i have read some were that this is normal seems to get better when warm, when i say lazy i meen it seems to hold onto the gears for a while :?:
few scatches but for 2k what do i expect, just need some MT's and i'm away   looks like its had some recent shocks and springs and a tow bar sits well maybe HD springs :!:  and am guessing its not done much towing as all the brackets on the tow bar look nearly new.

looking forward to getting it muddy

Good on yer Lee!

I bought a 1994 V8 Auto last year with 102,000 on the clock and the same type of service history as yours, thankfully very rust free and a great vehicle.

The gear box is a bit slow especially when cold, this is normal it seems. Ashcrofts do a modification to cure this on their exchange boxes but only worth doing if you need to rip the box out (but they are reputedly very strong so unlikely to need to).

See if you can find out when the gearbox oil (and oil screen) was last changed, it should be every 25K but it is a long job so can get ignored. I just had mine done and it cost over £200. I could have done it myself but you have to remove the chassis cross member and the exhaust headers, so I thought it easier to pay someone.

Also if the gearbox temperature light comes on, it is likely to be the switch, it tends to corrode as it sits below the engine in the pipe to the gearbox oil cooler and gets covered in crud. That's what happened to mine, only £15 for a switch but I had the oil changed too just to be on the safe side.

I would also endorse what has been said above about oil changes, mine is a second vehicle so insured on a limited mileage, classic policy at only 3000 miles a year, so I intend to change the oil every year (or twice as often as recommended - 6000 miles). In fact that's my next job as soon as I've cleared enough space in the garage!

Apart from that all it has cost me is fuel (lots of it) as long as you don't count the new wheels, BFG mud terrains, steering guard, jate rings.... and i've only just started on it.

Oh yes, when you get a chance, go to a franchised Land Rover dealer with your VIN and check to see if you are covered by the recent recall. If so you will receive a nice shiny new free petrol tank from Land Rover (mine is being done tomorrow).

Hope you enjoy it, I do  :D  :D  :D
