Who's Test Track Is This?
« on: November 24, 2005, 13:13:03 »
In preparation for our trip to Leicester on Saturday got a copy of the Landranger 1/25000 OS sheet (140; 'Leicester & Coventry')) when I went to the Library this morning.

Whilst having a look over it, I found a 'Proving Ground' marked near Fenny Drayton on the A5.

I presume it's automotive proving rather than aeronautical?

For some daft reason the last couple of time's we've gone past the MIRA head office on the A5 I've always thought it was Mira as in showers (must be because Triton Showers are in Nuneaton)

I'm gonna make some people jealous now I'm afraid ! ... I _have_ driven some of those test tracks in a MGB GT, and been taken around the off-road course. They had a 50 years open day a while back (1998 possibly) and the public could go in, loads of stuff organised.

I was also fortunate that my father worked there for 25 years, started off crash-testing MGB's :) so I kinda grew up there, in fact learnt to drive there before I was 17. It is a very cool place ... wonder if we could get a 'club' in there to access anything nowadays ? not sure what stuff for 4wd they have left though, there used to be a tank  at one time !

Cheers, Simon (former resident of Leicestershire, now in sunny Cambs where we've not got snow no matter what the weather man says !)

Born and raised in Nuneaton yet I always thought it was the shower people too    :?
Hissy took great delight in letting me know otherwise in between rolling of eyes and quietly laughing to himself at my ignorance.
