What do you keep in your vehicle for snowy weather?

Bearing in mind that I can't afford snow chains, just wondering whether anyone has any good tips or cheap gadjets for the imminent bad weather apart from the obvious shovel, car mats, and extra coat?

not just in the car but on the car too (as in engine bay)

chekcing fluid levels and ensuring aircon works and isnt leaking

making sure u have a full tank is good too, and some wellies!

I was just going to say that, so I will add FOOD instead, if you get stuck you will get hungry or you will need more energy for a recovery or digging out.

In the car I have:

Hi-vis vest
Assorted tow straps, ropes and shackles
Flashing amber beacon
Shovel
Holdall containing - sleeping bag, thermal top and trousers, extra fleece top, extra trousers, thick socks.
Stout boots
And a truck load of scoff ! (biscuits/chocolate/raisins/mars bars)

A good film for the DVD player as normally the snow will turn to rain in a couple of hours leaving you free to drive home  :lol:

keep some money/change on board ( in a safe place), you cant always rely on a mobile phone, and you could ( if close enough ) get to a local shop if walkable.

i also keep a small camping stove on bord too.

Your right, I used to live in Cambridge and a few years ago there was an accident on the A14 in the snow which brought the city to gridlock, everyone was trying to phone home, and you could get a signal, but the network was 'full' and you couldn't make a call for love nor money.

Turn the intake on the snorkle to face away from the wind. Dont want to find the intake blocked in the morning!!
Tow ropes (x2), winching gloves, shackles, de-icer, scraper & Coastguard Hi-Vis waterproofs.
Also have the CB & PMR radios in the Disco plus the usual kit that's carried so I think I should make the 10 miles into work tonight.

Glad to see a lot of people are mentioning 'Hi-Viz' clothing

For work I have the standard 'yellow' Hi-vis vest, and a nice trackside 'orange' vest..........and for my own safety (should I ever need to change a wheel on the motorway etc) I have a full 'police spec' jacket, and if the weathers really foul - a pair of hi-vis salopettes. Friends reckon its overkill, personally I'd rather not be !!!!!!!

When its predicted to be bad, I carry a flask of coffe and a spade.  That way i can have a nice hot drink while he digs me out!!

Keep some money/change on board (in a safe place) you can’t always rely on a mobile phone, and you could (if close enough) get to a local shop if walk able.
Wellies or Stout boots
Shovel
High visibility vest
Flashing amber beacon
Holdall containing - sleeping bag, thermal top and trousers, extra fleece top, extra trousers, thick socks.

Snow good excuse to use Range Rover which has tow ropes shovel etc in it. :D

I'd also add the following items:

1) Can or two of spray de-icer.
2) Ice/snow window scraper.
3) Snow chains (if you've got 'em).
4) Gloves & Hat.
5) Waterproof overtrousers (nothing worse than the snow getting your legs wet).
5) Mobile phone (it might work) and/or CB.
6) Spare fuel can (20L jerry can if out in the sticks- only used mine once but it adds a hell of a lot of reassurance!)

I always carry too much stuff....does nothing for my economy but gives great peace of mind. All ususal recovery gear+
Candles and lighter/matches - great for keeping warm they will warn a LR easily.

american goretex high leg insulated hunting boots($99) Awesome ..if i have to walk out i would choose these over anything else- I have scarpa walking boots and these are way better for cold weather.

tent,insulation mat and sleeping bag - might sound mad but would you want to sit in a car that could be rammed ??? If needs be i would sit any storm out...the tent i have has been used by me in Cairngorm in winter.

I thought I was well prepared with equipment in my vehicle for winter. But reading what everyone else has in their vehicles makes me feel completly unprepared!
