Turbo pipework
« on: November 28, 2005, 22:42:32 »
Something Iv'e been wondering ever since I bought my H reg 200Tdi (but not done anything about), does it affect perfomance if the large pipe that runs from radiator area in to the turbo is split? Is it just an air input or is it pre-warmed, or something?  :?

I take it that you mean the reason that the H reg which doesn't smoke, leak oil (much), has clean water, etc, seems sluggish compared to the J reg I had previously is most probably the split hose?

:(biglove): HMMM PIPEWORK :(biglove):

Colin - do you have the Disco Hose Kit at £135 fitted there?  I'm about to rip out my EGR any day now, and was going to pick up some pipework from my local parts supplier, but those look much nicer.

Notice any difference?

I take it you mean the pipe that runs from the turbo to the intercooler??
If so then yes!!!!
Actually cheaper to buy an uprated silicone set than a standard one from a dealer!!!

To explain a bit further (sorry if this is really basic)...

Air from the air intake (i.e. air filter) gets drawn into the turbo charger and gets compressed, which causes the air to be heated.
Hot air is less dense and carries less oxygen, therefore less oxygen rich air will reach the intake manifold.

The intercooler is added to cool the air and thus make it denser so more oxygen rich air can be pushed into the engine (which will also mean more fuel can be added = more power)

Most intercoolers are of the air to air variety (including all Land Rover products) which means they transfer heat from the compressed air in the intake plumbing to the cooler outside air.

All air to air intercoolers work in the same manner, air is pulled in through the air filter to the turbo charger, compressed then routed to the intercooler.
Once inside the intercooler it passes through a series of small tubes that have many thin fins attached. The heated compressed air flowing through the intercooler heats up the fins and the tubes, then the cool outside air flowing across the fins pulls heat away from the tubes and fins. This heat transfer occurs constantly while the turbo is working - so basically an intercooler is a heat exchanger.

From there it is fed into the intake manifold and into the cylinders.

The problem with having a split hose is that the air compressed by the turbo (and thus now a higher pressure) will be forced out out of the pipework,  resulting in less air reachin the intake of the engine - which will result in less power, and an incorrect fuel to air ratio - though this depends on where's it leaking from.

For replacement hoses, I would also recommend Allisport - www.allisport.com

In all honesty, the one in pictures from Twisted Performance isn't the best design - although I doubt whether it actually makes 'that' much difference on a Land Rover.

Although silicone tube is re-enforced to reduce expansion under boost, they do still expand which will reduce flow and induce turbo lag.  A solid pipe (with mandrel bend curves) with two small silicone pipe sections at either end is a much better idea... though this is probably more relevant on a performance or race engine than a Diesel Land Rover engine.

Sorry for the long post.

Thanks, It's good to know that the money I spend will actually likely make a significant difference! And don't worry about it being basic, I'm a very basic person, probably that'll be one reason why I like Land Rovers!

Ian - thanks for that info, it's really great to find out the "why's".

Twisted do one of these...
"TYPHOON 300 DISCOVERY TOP STAINLESS TURBO PIPE"

...would this be a better bet, being stainless?  I'm just looking for a straight through pipe to put in place when I blank off the EGR on my 98 300 TDi.

May try Ali as well.  If I'm going to freeze my nuts off in the cold working on the Disco, then I want to know when I put the bonnet down that I've made the best choice.

Intercooler will come later... when I've stashed more cash away from SWMBO.  Then, next service...

Horness, the cheapest way for disconnecting the EGR valve is just to block the pipe running from the EGR to the intercooler outlet pipe.
All you need is a blanking plate that cost less than £2 at a dealers.

I actually removed mine, blanked the exhaust manifold and then cut the original metal pipe to remove the section with the EGR pipe, but retaining the bend, and then refitted it using silicone hoses I got from Allards.

Just to let you know that now that it has warmed up enough for me to venture under the bonnet I took the offending pipe off and blocked up the holes with silicone sealer. It's made a hell of a difference so I got a price for those blue pipes.............£72 plus VAT. I would like to change them all just in case there are more splits. I can't find them on any of the usual sites, anyone know of a cheaper alternative or the correct part numbers? Cheers!!!

You'll only find get them from the people listed above or from Allard's as they are made for these companies.

£74 for a full set seems about right, you get what you pay for!!  :D

Finally got a new pipe and fitted it. All I can say is, if you think your Disco is lacking in power it's worth a look at the turbo pipes, makes hell of a difference when they aren't split. Went for the cheap standard pipe for now (about £15).

The offending pipe................

Black box.... I gather your having an interupter box fitted as your 300Tdi should be one of the few fitted with an ECU.

Might be worth asking Andy at Allisport if you could have the ECU chipped rather than an add on box....  he 'should' know somebody who can do it.

Not that bad of a price IMHO.... Andy's quite a sound bloke too.  (have been there doing some work to his BMW powered racer)

Have spoken about chipping and am advised the box change would be best.
I know Andy from having my 110 td fitted with one of the large intercoolers, what a difference that made.

We have camped at the sawmill a couple of times too, once when I had mine done and once when a friend had his 110 done. Nice place to camp for the weekend and you have symonds yat etc on your doorstep to visit.

I cant wait to feel the difference next Friday.
