DELEMA!

OK i have a dellema , that is this  do i swap over the transvere box from disco to 90 defender as we seem to be using the defender more as a road going vehicle and the disco as a more offroad vehicle
by swapping the transvere boxes over im guessing that i will have lower gearing in the disco for of roading and higer gearing in the 90 for road use has anyone done this or got  a disco with a 90 transver box in whats it like! or has anyone put a disco transvere box in a 90 defender whats the difference in drivability on and of road if i was to do it any info would be great regards colin

I've put a defender transfer box in my Disco.
The gearing is back to where it was after I'd fitted 235 85 16 wheels and tyres.
The Disco though then only gets up to just over 70 and the fuel economy is down in fact I reckon everyting is down by about 13%.

I only did it as I tow a caravan a lot. Most weekends.

Colin, you need to look at the transfer box ratios.
Earlier Defenders have a 1.6:1, later TD5's have a 1.4:1 and the Disco runs a 1.22:1 ratio box. This is only the high box - low box is the same across the range!

I've fitted a 1.4:1 TD5 T-box in the Disco to cope with the 33" tyres and, as Wanderer said, its back to about normal speeds although the engine revs are up a wee bit, using more fuel.

If you put a 1.6:1 box in the Disco then, on the road, you'll be screaming the engine, going nowhere fast and using fuel like its burning a hole in you pocket. Off road you won't notice any difference for your trouble.

The 90 on the other hand, with the Disco T-box should give a better MPG at motorway speeds, although if you've got 235x85R16s fitted then it may struggle in the lower gears with the likes of pull-away.
