What Mike said and check the spill lines as well - had a tiny split in one of mine which would suck air in when booting it and the engine would cough and stutter all over the place but soon as you drove it a bit more 'sedately' it was fine - check the braiding on the hoses for being soaked in diesel.

have a good check on intercooler hoses its normally the one that you cant see very well   best to remove fully check /replace if bad also check that they not on to tight when put back as that can cause them to split under the jubilee clip and you wont notice till now so also check on the hoses where the clip has been positioned and make sure that the sit correctly over the rims of the connectors else will lose all preasure when under load, while you got off :D  may aswell check the fins on the turbo give all area a good clean pipes a good clean out also check front of intercooler if blocked with mud it wont work properly

well guys its got worse... I have replaced the fuel filter put new glow plugs in checked all the hoses and the turbo is fine. :?  :? ..And know its stopped on me again as if the fuels not getting there??? It would only do 50 mph on the way home and every time I went near a hill slowed right up the picked up as if nothing was up then at the junction stopped dead :x  :x ...I started the disco and put my foot to the floor and it didn't rev over 4 grand..if it was a petrol I would of said not sparking or not enough fuel but diesels I have no idea,,,HELP???????

Sounds normal for my Mpi.  Are you sure you dont have a mpi engine under there

Seriously tho, I think it could be the lift pump. I seem to recall other posts on other forums with similar symptons and everyone shouting about the lift pump.

sound like what was happening with my defender when lift pump went.
to test on defender just need to carefully undo fuel filter and see if full to the brim ..... not full good chance of lift pump leaking, but not sure if the same on the disco

Small air leak in the fuel supply would cause this too.  I dont reckon its anything major on the engine though as being a diesel and you havent said anything about large amounts of smoke which is normally a dead give away.

Often forgoten is the fuel sedimenter bowl under the o/s rear wheel arch on the inside of the chassis. It could be restricting fuel flow.

Is the tickover erratic while stationary?
If it is then it may be the springs in the injector pump. I had that earlier this year.

Did you check the pipes on the sedimenter?
They sometimes corrode and allow air into the system.
