big bang from my back axle

so there i was today, pulling out of sainsburys car park, when i hear a loud bang and suddenly loose all drive.
dang, i think, there goes another half shaft

so i get back to my work car park after putting it in 4x4, and pull out both shafts, and both are still in one peice, but the oil in the axle is a nasty rust brown colour
the prop shaft still turns, so it appears that my diff has gone the way of the fabled norwegian blue.
oh well

anyone know where i can get a new diff from?

Think your self lucky. I have just bought a 109 with a 3.3L perkins engine in I think I will be needing new diffs and halfshafts more than I need fuel...

Oh dear well at least you know what it is now......

Its all in the fun of owning a series landy...

I was on a 4x4 day and went for a big hill, Just as I was about to get my front wheels to the top of the hill it stalled.....and stuck.
That was it no gears no movment at all. Could not even free wheel back down the hill it was solid. I had to get another 4x4 to tug me forward to get it on top of the hill but then it was fine. So I continued to play 30 mins later it happened again.....That was it for me.....Head went...and the gob...

It turned out to be when I pulled the box in bit that 3rd gear had lost a tooth and it was picking it up and sticking between gears thus locking the box.

i'm wondering if its safe to drive with the rear diff as it is, just using the front axle, or will it lock in the way your gearbox did?
the only way to know is to pull the diff out i suppose

the only problem may be that there is bits floating round in there, they could cause a lockup, its not a big job to change the diff, and should be easy enough to get one

paddocks have series 3 diffs for 70 plus vat, so if all else fails i can go to them.
confusingly, they also have series 2 diffs, at a lower price. i thought they were the same?

I have fit early 90 diffs in my 2.25 D landy and its alot better for road use. 85mph on a good day on flat. I can drive 70mph without sc*ewing the engine to death....this may be the time to go get 2 second hand units and save yourself fuel and engine bills.... Fuel economy is brill now...

but whats the acceleration like?
mine is bad enough as it is, and your engine has been modded for more power

All I have done at the moment to my engine is re adjust the injector pump. It was slow at first as the pump was out buy 2mm. It accelerates to 70mph in about 20-25seconds its good. The home made exhaust is a defo as the original exhaust is very restrictive. I have done away with the oil bath filter and fit a renault 21 paper filter which helps alot.

stripped it down tonight, and it appears that i have managed to shear off all the bolts that hold the crown wheel to the diff centre :shock:
how i managed that, i'll never know. but it least it might be repairable.

new diff is now in and working, thanks Chris!
much less play in the back axle now, and theres only a slight thunk as i take up drive.
its leaking a bit from around the diff/axle joint, but i've tightened the bolts up more, so it might be okay now.
