Defender rear discs

Due to a nasty grinding noise from the rear I crawled underneath to have a look  :shock:      I got out pretty da*m quick as well cos' I couldn't see owt' for mud  :oops:

Amazing aimt' it, you spend a small fortune at the powerwash and think you've got most of it ....................  but it clings on like concrete.

Anyway, enough rambling, 1/4 hour with a screwdriver and wire brush and found (as I thought   ), one rear pad down to metal and very sad looking rear disc.

Anyway folks all I need to know is what do you use to get the 2" (52mm) retaining nuts off with, is it a trip to Halfrauds or the local motor factor tomorrow for a BIG socket, or is there another way ............  except beating it with a stick (or a hammer and chisel)  

any advice gratefully received

Do you mean the BIG nut in the hub (can't remember the official name)


I've got one of the box-spanners that size, if you want to borrow?

"BIG NUT" in the hub seems a very apt descriptiom to me Richard

a hubnut spanner..

should only be a couple of quid.

Yep - you should be able to secure a box spanner for about a fiver.

However, when you reassemble the hub, use good quality locking washers, not really cheap ones, because they corrode on the the hubnuts and are a complete pain to remove later. I eneded up buying a 52mm 1/2" drive socket for doing the job (which I obtained from here).

That's the very item I put in the Discovery last night.

I'm in tomorrow morning finishing off removing the last of 45 square-metres of carpet in readiness for new, so if need be you could nip over for it in the morning??

Alternatively text me an address & I'll try to drop it off on the way to work

Sorted it this morning, managed to get a socket locally

Good job really as the torque setting for the rear hub nut on my motor is

210Nm


 :shock:   :shock:   :shock:

Also probably need long scaffold bar
