I'm having a moan about the FBU not that i'm a fire fighter but credit where credit is due.

The FBU moaned about Hertfordshire Fire & rescue Service for being inadequtly ill prepaered for a fire of this scale PR#T

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4527366.stm

http://www.herts.police.uk/about/buncefield_incident.htm

2-3 day's to put out a major fuel fire of that size well FBU shall we critisise the late great Red Adair for taking so long to put out Piper Alpha or the devils cigarette lighter or the other major petroluem fires around the world or the fire fighters who tackled the blaze at chernobyl.

The chief fire officer played a good hard fight on his patch and won and there was no loss of life and seeing as the chief fire officer lost 2 firefighters to flat fire earlier this year i raise a glass to them all the expert's as well the normal fire fighter's who put there lives on the line for us remember they go in when other people run out.

we can't be prepared for every eventuality and lesson's will be learn't  that will help reduce risk in the future and around the world.

Perhaps the guy from the union would like to go back on the run and see what the job is realy like or does like his job in is ivory tower to much to get his hands dirty.

whinge finished

Agreed, after the initial blast, loss of life should be the top priority, I imagine no fire service has the facilities to deal with a job like that

They can loose a life in a house fire, let alone a major disaster

They did good to do what they did

Greatest "respect" where due to those guys.
But no amount of back stabbing the good guys is going to hide the question of how this place was built where it was and how it was.
So that all of this (the fire) was even possible!

They could never have been prepared for that.  The place would have 'in house'  facilities anyway, but no-one could plan properly for something of that magnitude

Yeah Big ups for the FARS boys and girls and also to all those in the community who rallied around to help each other out, warms the heart it does!

As for the eeejoots who take cheap shots such as the Fire Brigade union reps they are just bum fluff! To think they are after support! Theres only so much training you can do at the end of the day and FARS like the Police realise that when they join the job they are actually joining a (dare I say it) Dangerous proffession which may take the ultimate cost.

I suppose they really should begin training now for Nuclear accident combined with terrorist attack marsian invasion , sunami swilling hurricane wooshing multiple aircraft collision over a arms dump in the middle of Oxford street next. Just pillocks!

Rant over. :)

Yeah, I heard him this morning on the news...  I won't repeat what I called him.

In my view they *were* prepared for it.

They went out, fought the fire, adapted their approach a number of times based on the situation which unfolded...  sounds like they were doing *exactly* what they should have been doing.

I have no doubt there will be a full review of the events, and that the results of that review will be shared with other forces who have similar facilities in their regions, in the hope of making massive scale responses more efficient and effective.

Well done to the guys out there...  we forget about them all too often in daily life and it is only when something like this occurs that we remember they are putting themselves on the line.

It makes you wonder, when the FBU come out with such crap, if you can trust the FBU when it comes to other issues that they have.

Great work people.

Any person entering that hell hole deserves a medal.I would like to know what provisions for a disaster like this the oil company had made, they make millions so how much do they spend.

having spoken to a friend who is in the service and airing my view as has been said here he said the FBU are actually taking a pop at the government for cutting training etc because it saves cost, did you know new recruits when trained dont actually see flames because of health and safety issues and they are not trained to deal with oil/fuel fires as it might endanger the trainee apparently

Not true in the case of Hertfordshire, unless they have changed their policy in the last two months. I have attended various meetings at the Fire and Rescue Service training centre in Stevenage, the last being in October and witnessed the trainees tackling fires out the back.

In fact I was told they are looking for a new training centre because of health and safety considerations, not to the trainees but to the housing estate on one side and the school right next door

At the end of the day, they did a great job =D> and despite what has been said, they did have a plan and they exercised regularly at Buncefield but in the circumstances the explosion and fire far exceeded anything the "experts" told them should occur.

True the FBU were trying to prove a point about reducing resources as a result of the current "Modernisation" programme but they seem to have stabbed their own members in the back in the way they chose to do it!

The FBU are on the bandwagon trying to get more support from there members, any chance and they are there.

No fireservice can prepare for a fire on that scale, major disaster plans are always in place for an event like this but until it happens we will never know if they will work, and they always change according to conditions.

Live fire training is done in Essex and it is a fantastic training course, it gives you utter respect for the fire, believe me you need to repsect fire.

Hats off to the Herts boys and all the brigades who supported them, =D> We had a memo yesterday at our station not to use foam on any training drills, short supply, can't think why.

If anyone can be bothered, look up Escombreras Refinery. That was in 1969, but the technology and methods of firefighting have not evolved that much and in that one, not only half the fire brigades of the South of Spain were involved, but the Army and Marines, as well as the Navy helped extinguishing it, and yet it took about a fortnight just to control it.

Anyone who dares have a go at Herts fire Brigade should hang their heads in shame. In my opinion, they have done a grand job, and my praise and admiration goes to them, starting on the grunts, and up to the Chief Officer.
