removing engine

Ok I've built a kit car and do a lot of my own mechanics but never removed a disco engine and gearbox... The whole lot has to come out.

Does anyone have a capable engine crane that lives anywhere near me - or perhaps even someone willing to lend a hand (with or without engine crane?

ask a farmer with a fore-end loader and a steady hand

much stronger than them trolley cranes

esp if they own a jcb or a loadall.

however i think you can split them and not need to get both out at the same time in that you can split the gb and enigne and get the gearbox out from underneath

would save you a lot of weight in lifting and leverage cos it sticks out a bit

I've no idea what a fore-end loader is even!

They can all come out seperatly or together - I'm breaking the car so no real bones either way although I need to do it PDQ.

ahhhha!  Not sure they'd want to take a trip to suburbia and wait around whilst I unbolted things :-(

oh... anyone any ideas if you can get the whole engine and gearboxes out as one?

i did this on a transit once, not sure if discos are the same

remove the radiator,
                 front panel headlights etc
                 remove the props

and wheel the engine out instead of lifting it.

otherwise a 1.5 tonne hoist from a tool hire shop

good idea!  what about the front axle?  I guess I could wheel it out to the side after jacking the car up

surely if ur breaking the disco it would make sense to get rid of the axles and drop the engine down that way and lift the body away with hi lift jacks that way all the engine and box can stay together or am i talkin rubbish  :lol:

I've done that with a kit car - lift the body over the engine... but I was thining that if I did that with the disco you cant really wheel the body with hi-lift jacks!  I guess some kind of trolley for the engine to drop down onto.. oh the other worry was would I be able to get to all the mountings if it's on the floor?

i reakon if urs has a lift like mine then u would be able to ok it will be a strain on arms but yes u would have to get some sort or wheeled thing if it was me doin it i would split the transfer/gbox frm the engine and take it out with a engine crane there cheap enough to hire i belive and most tool hire places have diffrent weight cranes :D  oh and dont forget to take it back to the shop  :lol:  :lol:
