A question of morals

I went down to the local shop to buy a packet of butter.  

I paid but only had a £20 note ( I know this as I tried to give it to SWMBO but she gave it back as I was skint).

I just noticed I have £29 in my pocket which can't be right (a £20 note being one) - the shop must have given me too much change.  If I had spotted it at the time I would have said something straight away however that was about 5 hours ago now and they are very closed.

Would you go back the next day?  I might just stick the tenner in a charity box thing about it tho'.

what you need to think about is the consequence of taking the money back.

if its a local enterprise it will happen in your benefit as you will be classed as a trusted person to deal with, and if you are caught short in the future he might tell yuou to call again and bring the rest of the money

if its a chain then they will say thanks and thats the end of it.  they didnt notice it missing but the local shop man will (or woman)

we tell all our customers if they are short to drop it off

cos before they give us their dog we take down their details (address/ phone number) so there is no escaping!

u dont want to be getting a knock from me of an evening asking for money cos i dont do niceties and i dont do excuses.

neither to small claims courts!

so back on track

its up to you, maybe if you kept your trap shut and not said owt on here you would have kept the money but the do-gooders on here will tell you otherwise and your conscience kicks in!

If I screwed up then I want people to tell me... (no comments about small fires!).. I think it's family run, its a chain franchise type place and I've been there about 3 times in 2 years so dont really know much about the people/place.  They dont say much and arent particularly friendly, but I'm getting one of those mega moral thigns going on in my head.

I've caught a cash card in an ATM that had pin and everything entered all I needed to do was press the button saying more services please and could have had £250, I took it into the branch - there was a long queue so I just went up to the counter saying excuse me, and this was in the cash machnies with pin entered... All I got for my troubles was filthy scowling looks from customer and counter woman.  

I've handed money back or too much change in the past and I dont get any thanks (not that I do it for the thanks)..

I think the people in the area I live in are getting me down (mean southerners).

So is it charity box (who are in need and grateful) or drop it back to the shop... or buy someone else a present ;-)

its different with an atm cos thats someone's own money.

wife always accuses me of being a sceptic but the thing is these days you cant just leave your car unlocked on the drive, you dont get conversations when you walk down the road in your own village.  and one major point ive noticed since moving to a more urban area.. people dont flash or wave you down as you drive towards a hazard or worse.. a speed camera.

when ive done it i get quizzical looks from people thinking im flashing them cos i know them!

well the atm queston isnt really someones money as the bank would pay the person back.. I know they have these 'stupid people' clauses but as far as I know (knowing about 10 people who work for a leading building soc) they never invoke them as customers are likely to go somewhere else or loose confidence in the whole banking structure whcih would be bad (notice banks never go out of business, they only ever merge or get taken over).. there is a very good reason for that!

I do know what you mean about unfriendlyness.. I pulled up once and flashed people approaching a camera van - one guy did a loop back round twice and thanked me, and about 3 people waved a thanks (this was one on a stupid dual carriage way they had reduced to 50 when there really is no reason).. most people (especially women) gave me very puzzled looks!  

I really wish I was living 30 years ago when life seemed so much more pleasant.. I rem a sketch on the tv where a woman smacks a passer by - member of public - with a broom, his reposnse "I beg your pardon"  I loved that!

mind you the young girl/ Lad that served you might have been in trouble with her/ his boss? When he found the Takings down! And make her pay it out of her wages?

If it's a Large Retailer/Supamarket then sod Em!! They can afford it?

Did that at a garage they gave me to much change went back into the garage to tell them i had the wrong change. so went back into the garage and they said it was to late to sort it as i had left the shop. and bascily said tuff. You should of see the face of the bloke when i said thanks for the extra £5 you have given me. :lol:

I think I'd take it back, given the circumstances.  It'll give you a warm glow of satisfaction.  If it were the local bank, on the other hand, I'd keep it, given that they have no compunction about screwing their own customers!

simple, ther shop, their rules, surely they have a sign saying

"all change must be checked as mistakes cannot be rectified after leaving the shop.. blah bla."

you entrusted them to be competant in their job. they said nothing to the pont at which you left their premises and thereby completed your part of the contract, they gave you the change,and it is up to them to ensure they do it correctly.

....and lets face it, you go back in the next day, the spotty oik on the till will most likely pocket the orange wonder anyway!

give it to something/one you love if your concience still ways heavy.

That has swung me onto the 'keep it' side, grumpy people don't deserve it.

I was given too much change recently in my local chip shop, I go there probably once a fortnight, it was only £1 too much, but I told the lady and she thanked me very much and put it back in the till (this leads onto another question - if you give it back where will it go?), now when I go in I feel I get better service, a few of them recognise me and know what I want and they seem to select the best items to give me rather than taking the first.

It makes me feel better stood on the moral high ground..... BUT in your position I wouldn't waste my time taking it back, he doesn't sound like he desrves it, he might remember being short, but won't remember you, any thanks will be a mere token gesture, and if you take it back he won't even remember you next time you go in.

The things you have just mentioned there are a lot of the reasons we moved to where we are. I leave the car(and the house) unlocked for days on end. All the locals look out for one another, and everyone stops for a chat when passing. Even forgot the garage door one night and left it wide open all night with the lights blazing for all to see. :oops:  Integral garage too! Door into the house unlocked, the full works. It's how village life is supposed to be, it's like stepping back in time. Inverness however, only 40 minutes away, total opposite, full of ignorant city dwellers, cutting you up, standing on your toes, shutting doors on you. Grrr.
Needless to say, I'm in no rush to move back down south.

It's not just villages, when I lived in Cambridge some of the local kids knocked on my door when i came home from work with the news

"the people next door have gone out and left their front door open with the keys in it, we've been watching it all day, but what should we do?"

So I took all the electrical stuff.....  :twisted:

NO! I had a quick look around the inside armed with a large bat shaped object to make sure no-one was in, then left a big sign on the front door, locked it and took the keys.

And that was in a city  :P

i once left 4trak unlocked, keys in the ignition over night!

normally if its not nailed down then it will go walkies, the local scotes must have thought it was a trap! :lol:  extremely lucky tho!
