Idiot 4x4 drivers
« on: December 29, 2005, 18:01:47 »
...and most of them seem to be in Dorset tonight !

Had to go into town (around 8 miles each way) this evening, so jumped in the  205 and headed off up the snowy roads.  Nice and slippy under-tyre, not a great deal of traction..

I passed a few cars, all taking it nice and easy and then....   WOAH !!!

Around the corner in front of me comes a Discovery going sideways...  I slow down to a stop and glare at him as he drives past, apparently unaware of how badly he's driving.

About 2 miles later, a Land Cruiser comes barrelling along the middle of the road, and starts slipping and sliding all over the place as he tries to get over sufficiently to pass me.  (I am parked in the bank at this point)

Can someone explain to me what posseses 4x4 owners to believe the laws of physics somehow don't apply to them ?    Yes, you have 4x4...  yes, you have good traction and can get up to a good speed...   Yes... you are driving a couple of tons of steel and when you try to slow that down in a hurry, momentum overcomes friction and you look like an idiot !!

It's days like this I'm glad I took the car....   on this occasion at least, I was in the sensible majority

Seems like the snow can bring out the worst in people. I know exactly what you mean though last time it snowed i was nearly wit by a 4x4 sliding down the road he got some abuse and hopefully wont do it again. where as i spent the night on the duel carridge way pulling people up the hill got two thank yous the rest of them just drove off like it as my job to do it the driver of the lorry who i helped out was very greatfull though and opened the back of his lorry and gave us two boxes of pork pies which was really nice!

I was out on the MC run in Derbyshire today...i was on the road back to Sheff past burbage moor. It was closed when we got off it( we joined it from a lane half way along). We went past the other end later and this had cones out and a road closed sign.
Conditions were really bad solid ice....yet me in the disco going v slowly in low box was caught by 2 normal cars clearly being driven by idiots!!!!
Complete cretins to have ignored a road closed sign and to do those speeds on solid ice. I was doing about 30 and these guys caught me up like i was stood!

Well i realised this 25 years ago, when i went with my brother, to collect my father from Holdon Hill, just south of Exeter, about 4-5 inchs of snow all over roards, he pulled up in a layby, as 38 tonne of low loader turns into one hell off a sledge down hills. We collected him, and drove up the exe valley to Bickleigh, where we lived, with this Austin 1300 up our arse all the way, kept trying to pull out and over take, we got to Bickleigh bridge, crossed it, and as we passed the Trout Inn, he pulled out again, off the end of the bend, went straight accross the road, and hit about the only lamp post in Bickleigh back then.
My father pointed out,
"its not how fast you can go, its how fast you can stop, that counts"
85% OF ALL LAND ROVERS BUILT, ARE STILL ON THE ROAD,
THE OTHER 15% MADE IT HOME ;)

You will always get the odd plonker damaging the reputations of reasonable ones.  Just remember they are a minority (but I agree).

Unfortunatly bud what you got here is a typical example of the cross-over
between the "normal/stupid" folk who see a "big" fourby as just a mpv
of one type or another not the enthusiast who drives a motor with the
 RESPECT it deserves.
yer better not naff this up an come back to these shores or god help me yer auld aunt nelly will jump out of her grave an like as not kick yer teeth in......

Tell me about it had bad experiences at Devils pit, Had a bloke who didnt give a hoot run into the back of me ans smash my window and break my back door and he said "oh well were off road mate you should expect damage" i agree that you should be prepared to damage your motor but you shouldnt have someone do it for you and just laugh it off!

what goes around comes around

one day those who drive like nobeds will soon come a cropper and i would hazard a guess fixing a disco or landcruiser after accident damage wouldnt come cheap

as those who know who can fix them cheaply are responsible drivers.

apparently! ;)

just got in after being out for a play in the snow with the mitsi shogun warrior hire car. went out into the country lanes so i was out of the way. its madness out there. i came to a 90 degree left corner and i could see headlights coming the other way so stopped at the verge and waited. next thing i saw was a fiesta loaded with 5 people spinning around . after waiting for 5 mins for it to wheels spin out of the ditch ( it was blocking the road. i would of helped if asked ) i then procceded to follow it around the corner. there was a mate of theirs in a corrolla dressed in castrol colours with bits hanging off it waiting to do the same as his mate. i hung back abit as this numpty stuck it straight into another ditch in a staright line.   they all piled out of the car and lifted it out of the ditch. at this point i squeezed [ast them before i eneded up getting hit by these nutters. abit further down the road i was meet by a vectra being driven up the hill and bouncing off the banks   . it wasnt a steep hill. alittle further up there is a real steep hill which i just climbed to the top of with little problem. now i should mention i was still in 2 wheel drive. i had gone out to have a bit of a practice . i managed to climb to the top of the hill with little problem. every time i felt the tyres loose traction i just eased off and gently reapplied power. the 4 wheel drive was always there just incase i needed it.

where do these people learn to drive  :?: they are either gonna hurt themselves or worse still someone else
cheers

Good to see Gosport had Snow, all 2-3 mm of it?

Took the disco out for a run and she just took the ice in her stride.  First time ive had snow and ice with a Coil sprung Land Rover, very impressed, does give you a slight over confidence tho.

Lets have more

I was out with the derbyshire run today. Ibexman couldnt get forward momentum on one lane due to ice. Now i should explain he has an ibex(i wish) lockers front and rear and 35 inch simexes. He also knows how to drive it and has done a few big events.
what im saying in a roundabout way is never have confidence when you are on ice, unless you have chains or studs. It goes from "oh look how well it copes" to backwards in a ditch in a blink of an eye.

Well son came home last night down in dumps again .......
On way home in snow last night he'd stopped on country road as seen lights coming, and a suit in a BMW climd onto his bonnet.
His pride and joy ibiza that he just had to have the engine rebuilt (they recond someone put the wrong cam belt on) now is unusable again.
He said it was a bit scary watchin them angel eyes coming up over his hood ...  like t see him try it with the shogun pfff

After all these horror stories, I have to say I've been surprised by how few dipsticks I've seen out and about. You sort of come to expect cars in ditches and up tree trunks at the first sign of ice. But nothing. A few long skid marks across junctions, but no signs of impact fortunately.

There is a tight blind bend at the end of the next village and the other morning I was crawling round it (always do, ice or no ice) when I met a series 2 coming equally slowly, but slithering the other way! I was rubbing along the kerb and he was still 2 feet from the other side. Still, he managed to miss me.... but it would have been mildly amusing...... 2 Land Rovers head on at 5mph
