:)  :) Happy New Year to everyone and my condolences to BTM in the sad loss of a friend...anyone any ideas exactly what the V.W.s are that are taking part in the Dakar Rally...they certainly appear to be giving the Mitus's some stick...

The V.W.s are based on that VW off-roader, which I cannot remember its name.

:)  :) Yes,your're both right..just been doing some research on the Web regarding these vehicles..I've tried following the Dakar on their web site to watch it live (so they claim) but unable to get any where...I only want to see how Charlie (long way round) Boorman is doing..

Yep, but like the front running Mitsis and Gordons 'Hummer' - the 'Race Touareg II' has nowt in common with the production vehicle. It's a custom built spaceframe running some very long travel suspension. Like the production car though, it is independently sprung all round. It weighs next to nowt.

......and it goes like stink! And their no. 2 car is driven by Jutta Klienschmidt - which is always a good thing!

Watch out for Peterhansel though, he just got fastest time on todays stage - he's back!

Chris Hammond is creeping his way up the field too. IIRC he started today in 73rd overall, and is now ahead of fellow brit (Green) in the Freelander Desert Warrior.

cheers

The live tracking is IMO not very interesting, but for overall standings look at http://www.dakar.com/2006/DAK/LIVE/us/500/classement/CGM.html
which gives

114 172 BOORMAN (UK)  BMW 21:25:03 07:15:45

Oh, there's some info on the Toureg at http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/frame.php?file=car.php&carnum=2595

I shouldn't worry too much. There's not much at the front of the pack that is anything like the standard motors.

Did anyone see on Eurosport where a Bowler nearly ran into the side of one of the trucks in the sand dunes. Brown trouser moment for them and the truck then lost momentum and got stuck in the sand.

It's getting better by the day. Great start with the mud stages in Portugal.

The DAFs failed scrutineering at the start.

Will the Hummer last the course.

61st overall now. And whatever Jim did to 458 seems to have worked, it's in 77th.

Lasting the Baha is one thing. But lots of them in a row seems to be giving 'Flash' a bit of gip! He got towed out today.

He's only 1h30 ahead of the next truck! But yes I suppose going some is a good description, that time would put him in 24th in the car class!

Bowler's support truck is happily plodding along in 29th (no 562)

No, you only wanted a Bowler, it was me who wanted the whole company :D

Wouldn't mind a Kamaz as our support truck though.

Oooooooh, yeah!

Smacks of the 'Perlini' years when Francesco Perlini won every truck stage, and even managed 7th overall on the prologue. Now, that was one sick, sick motor! Powersliding around hairpins. Waaaaaaay cool.  8)

Aww, dude, I'm drooling!
