Why does changing 4 wheels have to be a hassle?
« on: January 06, 2006, 16:56:13 »
I have put my Grizzley claws on today and I thought, easy job, nothing to it.

So I jacked it all up and changed them. Lowered the disco back down to the ground. Reversed out of the parking space and I heard something rubbing. Typical!

The near side front wheel rubs on the bumper edge, the off side did rub on the end of the side step but a bar against the end of the step and the wheel tread soon sorted that one out. Only needed to be tweeked about 10mm as it just catched. Also on full lock the tread hits a big bit of metal under the disco. No idea what the metal is but it looks important!

So I now have the fun job of trying to adjust the bumper. The off side wheel is miles away from hitting but the near side catches. Could the axle be twisted? I have no idea.

Help on any reasons why would be nice.

I was hoping this topic would be "the big green giant is born" but it isnt.

yup, your tyres are too big or you havent got enough lift. Thats both the cause and the solution to your woes.

well I have no lift as of yet as I only got the disco in November and dont have the money to buy a lift!  :D

But why does the of side wheel have about a hands width between the wheel and the bumper edge but the near side catches?

If its like mine the bumper had a nudge by the previous owner, one side sits about 2" further back than the other. used a tow rope to pull it back out.

Make sure you get the lock stops done straight away.

At Towcester we saw what was partly down to an aggresive tyre catching on a radius arm.
That's your "big important looking" bit of metal.

It rolled a Hybrid over end over end. Trust me.

im sure that radius are isnt supposed to be banana shape! I bet that roll was caused by high cog against side slope looking at where it ended up. Big tyres!

It was on top of the bank and turned to the left down a 45 degree(ish) bank that meant the n/s/f wheel was a couple of feet lower than the o/s/f on full lock the tyre caught under the n/s radius arm and due to the angles it threw it over. At least that's my understanding.
Mud Club were approached to go in and recover it. Good training exercise but not so good for the driver and the passenger.

They walked away though but with injuries.

I tried a big bar against the tyre and bumper but broke the bumper clip!

I will go for a search for a big tree tomorrow then. sounds like a trip down a byway to me! Oh well hard life!

If its the standard plastic bumper, trim it back with an angle grinder, gives a better look from the front aswell

it is the plastic bottom bit it hits. the guy i bought it off did say he had a company pull the bumper out a bit but it isnt enough.

I will go find a tree or attatch mine to Jakes disco. I am guessing you Jake are Bigblues ex owner?

I sold it a while back
I'm now running a 300 Tdi ES as my daily hack and mud plugger.

Are you coming to the pub meet on the 26th?

I have a disco es as well. It is my other daily hacker. No point in selling other car as it is in too good a nick to sell but worth nothing unfortunately so may as well keep hold of it incase the disco breaks down one day!

Im affraid I cant come as I will have work the next day. I have to be up at 3am so going to a pub over an hour away will mean about 3 hours sleep! I cant live on that!  I will be able to come one day when my Day off falls on the Thursday as I will get a lie in the next day. Just keep pm'ing me.

I'm off to find that tree to pull the bumper out or I may just say sod it and get a stanley knife to it! I cant believe a stanley knife will go through it though.

A nice new blade will cut the bumper with no worries.
Draw a line first, then score it with the blade. Then keep scoring, it'll slip through easy.

cool. That should sort the problem out and I wont need to pull the bumper back out will I???

Are bumper ends expensive to buy as my plan is to sell the bumper once I have got a winch bumper in not the near future due to the price of them!
